Please be aware that ever since it was started under FDR, the GOP has been trying to define it as unearned welfare and they have been trying to take it away.

If they ever manage to do this, we the American people will get bupkis. Zilch. Zero. Nada. Ever.

There will be no universal basic income. Why would there be? The president can’t “roll it out” with his magic wand, not with the same Congress that just took away Social Security, if that’s what they do.

The GOP wants to take every fiber of the social safety net away — the achievements of nearly a century of legislation. That’s it. You will get nothing.

I also think UBI would be a losing political issue.

4. Basically the money we paid goes to the current retirees

There is no savings account and our paystubs will be looked at and thanked for contributions to the past and current seniors. Whatever changes are made if any would affect the 40 and under like congress did in 1986 with the 65 to 67 age raise.

deposits both in the Fed bank account. It is the matching part by employers that is the real focus. Repug business owners don't want to pay it.

… when you are no longer having SSI deducted it looks good. Until you need it in your old age, and wonder where your Social Security check evaporated to.

3. I like the idea - but politically impossible for the foreseeable future

Pew's last poll on it says 55% oppose the idea.

Funding it is a huge problem, and the current inflationary crunch shows that Modern Monetary Theory is deeply flawed - fully funding it is the only option.

Low popularity ideas with major trade-offs are just not something we can consider right now.

No mainstream Democrat is proposing it. No example of it being scaled up to a State or national level.

at the full expense of the working people. It is who they are and what they do. The magic of the Republican Party is that they have convinced the victims that it is in their best interest to be victims.

7. It would cause significant inflation

Just $1000 a month for every citizen is 4.2 trillion dollars a year, the money for that simply doesn’t exist and would have to be created causing inflation, it could basically cancel itself out and be a wash.
