(15,807 posts)With Twitter, not sure his end game but the site was a mess before he bought it. I guess hes just continuing tradition.

(519 posts)He figured that all the conservatives crying out that they were getting unjustifiably banned for free speech was a grass roots phenomenon that he could reverse creating a huge profit as they all clamored to rejoin, when in reality it was just conservative media hyping this. The only ones that really wanted to rejoin were Russian bots and unsavory characters who would create a backlash among users and ad buyers who approved of the previous levels of content moderation.

(65,042 posts)Which toys are those? Almost everything at Tesla was in development when he took over the company.
And if we talk rockets, those aren't world changing. We've had those for over 60 years.

(15,807 posts)To the point where theres years backlog on purchases of Tesla. And the space program added competition which made NASA finally get off its butt and do something.

(65,042 posts)I guess we have different definitions of "changing the world".
And, since I don't see Teslas on every highway every day, I don't think a 3 year backlog is a positive.

(38,313 posts)Nothing he has done makes this world a better place. Absolutely nothing.
It's all vanity.
It pisses me off that my taxes buy lipstick for this clown.
jimfields33
(15,807 posts)You seriously think that?

(38,313 posts)That asshole figured out ways to exploit those who want to "save the world" and promote "technological progress" all for his own self-aggrandizement and wealth.
Everything he is celebrated for is garbage.
Three things that will save the world are the economic and political empowerment of women, unrestricted access to birth control and realistic sex education, and rising living standards for all eight billion of us.
To reduce per capita environmental footprints we need to abandon car culture, no matter how those cars are powered. We need to rebuild our cities to make them attractive places where car ownership is unnecessary.
Like it or not we've built a world economy that's dependent on high density energy resources, mostly fossil fuels. If we don't quit fossil fuels entirely the world will burn and billions of us will suffer and die. Solar and wind power are incapable of displacing fossil fuels entirely, that experiment is done, the numbers are in, so we'll have to rely on nuclear power.
We don't need Starlink in the cities and I don't want it in wilderness areas. Let the wild be wild. Let the skies be clear. If you can't get internet in a place, and it's important to you, don't live there.
Last but not least, natural humans will never have a significant presence in outer space beyond low earth orbit. Should our civilization survive, in spite of sociopaths like Musk, the solar system will belong to our intellectual offspring, synthetic beings that can walk around naked on the surface of places like Mars.
Even today, scientific research in space beyond LEO is best done by robots.
Musk shows the world who he is again and again. People need to quit buying his shit.

(6,017 posts)Even the minor funders such as banks are saying they don't expect to profit from the deal. So why would they invest in it, unless there was some other benefit?
Twitter was by far the largest and most effective platform for defeating fascism. Here in the USA, Republicans are a monolith. Democrats however are made of of a loose coalition of countless demographic groups. Twitter was the primary platform where they'd overlap and communicate and organize with each other, and do so in real time.
I cannot help but believe that his purchase - funded in no small party by Saudi Arabia, note - was an investment in dismantling that tool for anti-fascist political groups of all flavors.
Of course, in the meantime he may do things like take the decades of stored data and use it the Facebook used their data, to help the GOP win elections by running massive analysis of who is connected to who, triangulating even "anonymous" logins, etc. etc...and once the analysis is done, the parts not useful to various fascist governments willing to pay for it (Twitter is global after all) will be far more valuable to advertisers.

Naturally, the GOPee ended up being a good fit for him.
He's just too delusional to see they'll sink the EV industry if they get the chance. If Big Awl don't like it, they don't either.

(11,584 posts)We went to visit one Christmas after we'd opened some presents and found stuff strewn from one end of their large main floor to the other. My brother and I saw empty boxes of things we had never been able to play with before and expressed hope to play with these things with that brat, but it was too late: parts were broken already as he tried to jam things together before he hurried to open his next package. Stuff all over was further broken as he stepped all over it and many important pieces were completely lost. We were shocked as that sort of behavior would never have been allowed in our family and we were able to see why.
Elon Musk, we see you!
