I took off work (and also the following morning), like I do every even-year election. I plan on getting up late (around noon), because I know I will be up all night watching the news and results.
So after getting up and maybe making some coffee, I'll probably spend a couple of hours here on DU on my main desktop PC, while opening up multiple tabs in Chrome to read about election news from various news sources. After I do that, I will jump in the shower, and then drive 5 minutes to vote. There usually isn't a long line where I vote (last time there was it was 2012). I'll come back home make sure my MacBook is well charged.
Then I'll watch some TV in the living room, switching channels between CNN and MSNBC. A small amount of Fox too, to see what they are spewing.
Right before 7:00, the charged MacBook comes in the living room and I start going back and forth between TV and DU. This is when some polls start closing here on the East Coast. Around 7:30 I order food. If I'm lucky, it comes by 8:15. I shut the MacBook and watch TV while I eat.
Around 9 or 10 I make myself a mixed drink of Red Bull and vodka. I never drink Red Bulls except when I have to stay up, which is pretty much only Election Day.
And the rest of the night will be more of the same, switching channels, DU, and maybe even a YouTube live stream. How many drinks will I have? Well, that depends on the results.
So, what are your plans this Tuesday?

(102,279 posts)wine (LOL) to warm me up a bit (T overnights projected in the 30s). Mostly work otherwise so that there will be some considerable distraction to avoid any OCD--although if someone changes their mind at the last minute about working in my place, I just might be attached to the boob tube at home.

(404 posts)But in the evening, quiet evening at home listening to election returns.
Not too worried about local races (Illinois), but especially paying attention to state referendums on abortion.

(2,220 posts)So I will probably hole up with my knitting and listen to mellow jazz. I might peek in here a time or two in the early evening, but Im mostly going to pretend it isnt happening. I still have 2016 PTSD on top of my regular PTSD.

I was totally discombobulated for a week, felt like I was dreaming, nothing was real.

(13,991 posts)at 5pm. I have a six pack of bud light ready to go. If we win, Ill drink 3, if we lose, the whole pack is gone lol. Elections are one of the few occasions when I drink. Ill probably stay up until 1am or so.

Maybe well go to dinner and a movie. Ive done all I could. Donated, voted, now I just have to live with the outcome. I have no clue how this will play out. I expect claims of fraud in any election the GQP loses. Nothing will be settled Tuesday night.
Tuesday is just the beginning of a couple of long ugly months.

(15,421 posts)We should know who controls the House, and many Senate races will be called as well. Alaska will take weeks though, and I'm sure GA will go to a runoff.

(9,073 posts)Then major presentation I need to polish up and prepare for Wednesday morning. Mix in with usual work stuff, and I'll be pretty distracted.
Starting tomorrow, I'll be in the academic bunker, which means very limited internet time-wasting nonsense.
When I get home Tuesday evening, I'm toying with the idea of just cooking dinner, watching a movie, and going to bed without going online or checking my phone. I have a feeling results will be very drawn out, and breathless minute to minute, dramatic up and downs, mood swings, etc. Eh. I'm not gaining anything by watching or participating in that.
So I may just do a media black out, chill evening, find out the next day thing as an experiment.

(44,973 posts)I don't expect any long lines so I should be done with voting before I have to go to work.

(53,032 posts)I might do that. I've already voted, so I don't need to talk election day off. I used to give people rides to the polls, but my mobility isn't great now thanks to a serious accident this summer.

(15,421 posts)For example, let's say in NV that results are 98% in, and one candidate is leading bu 1,500 votes. He has a lot of knowledge and is an excellent statistician. He will give the breakdown of what counties are left.

(19,564 posts)Then I'm working the rest of the day. When I get off I'm doing dinner with the hubby and then binging some mindless comedies while checking in here and at a couple of news sites I follow. .
Monday night I'm making calls to reminding folks to go vote Tuesday.
I've done all I can. It's in the hands of the voters now.

(1,781 posts)it's usually never a good outcome from my perspective. So after I vote, I always go into "work around the property" mode and forget about the election as much as I can for the evening. It's like day trading stock, and I'll get myself all worked up and chewing on my fingernails if I get glued to the TV. I just wait until the next morning and deal with it all in one shot. It's a lot better for my nerves and my mood.

(11,611 posts)If it goes well, I'll watch til bedtime. If it doesn't I'll stop watching early like I did in 2016.

(14,944 posts)Then making food for election watch from 8-11 or so at town Dem supervisor home. Then home to toss and turn because election night has become an anxiety producing event for me and I will probably give up and election results surfing on major and local news stations. And of course I will be here with you good people while I do that.

(12,382 posts)I'll be on the road to Weed, CA starting tomorrow to make a delivery by Tues., after the delivery, I'll go to the nearest Truck Stop for the night and watch as the Dems deliver a knockout punch to the repukes and MAGAt's.

(10,829 posts)I have food shopping to do (I get a senior discount on Tuesdays), so I'll do that, straighten the house, then take my walk both for weight control and relaxation. I'll try not to turn on the TV until around 7 pm, have my Mac fired up, and then (with a healthy shot of spiced rum/crushed ice) watch the returns come in. I'll be keeping my eye on those House races in Virginia bc the results there could be predictive of how the night will proceed.
I'll try to stay calm, one way or the other. The again, I wouldn't put money on it.

(2,510 posts)my polling place around 11:00 AM, when things are usually slow. Then I will not follow any of the reports about the election.
I'll probably watch streaming TV - maybe a baking show or two. Start binge watching some mindless TV shows perhaps.
I would prefer to see the results on Wednesday morning, but I know that my husband will be watching Steve Kornacki on another TV and shouting results at me .... my anxiety level will be through the roof. I've been this way since 2016 - traumatized.

(32,705 posts)if no one says anything by Wednesday morning, I will cautiously peek at the headlines on DU. My state of mind is a little fragile so I would probably disappear for a while if we don't at least retain what we have now. Of course, if the Blue Wave materializes, I'll be right back here and on Twitter celebrating, talking shit and gloating.

(14,903 posts)I just voted early this afternoon - that's taken care of.
✔️👍
I might go extra shopping downtown at Michaels, Blick (art store), and Trader Joe's. They're all near each other. Or not. Work on some craft stuff if I stay home. And listen to Fordham U's Music Station in the afternoon.
Then around 7pm I'll turn to WNYC, MSNBC, and drop into DU to start my Election Watch.
Keeping 🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞🤞 !!!!!

(34,073 posts)And heading either to the Democratic Boiler Room (communication/problem solving central) for the SE region of Ohio (not quite sure why my county is grouped with the SE region - since it is in NE Ohio) - or - to a critical Democratic precinct in my county where the expected observer dropped out at the last minute. I'll hear sometime tomorrow (they have to get my credentials in order by 4 PM if I'm actually being placed inside a polling location).
Either way - I leave the house no later than 5:30 AM (maybe earlier), and won't return until after 9 PM.

(25,340 posts)I'll be poll greeting. (Outside the polls with a canopy and signs)
I wanted to do something more serious, but I've been working so hard. Poll greeting is fun. We can vote at any site in my county, but the site I poll greet at is also an Early Voting site, so there are tons of people there. On Friday, people were parked illegally in order to vote. If people can't find a parking spot, we can give them flyers with other polling sites nearby. We can also observe if any BS is going on.
After the polls close, I'll take my canopy home and head downtown to a watch party.
