"SNIP......

Thousands of people have signed an online petition circulated by a Christian organization condemning Republicans including Representative Marjorie Taylor Greene, a Georgia Republican, and former Trump national security adviser, Michael Flynn, as "false prophets."

In a description of its petition, the organization, Faithful America, blasts leaders of the "Christian nationalist movement," who "come to us in sheep's clothing by claiming to speak for Jesus, but ultimately prove themselves to be ravenous wolves who manipulate the language of religion and care only for themselves, devouring the rights of non-Christians, women, migrant families, voters, and the LGBTQ community."

In addition to Greene and Flynn, the organization labels Texas Governor Greg Abbott, Republican Ohio U.S. Senate candidate J.D. Vance, Pennsylvania Republican gubernatorial candidate Doug Mastriano, and Representative Lauren Boebert, a Colorado Republican, as "false prophets," according to the organization's website.

The petition, which has a goal of 15,000 signatures, currently has close to 14,000 signatures as of Saturday morning.

Sun Nov 6, 2022, 04:29 AM
Nov 2022

If you think they are, then what religion are the "false" ones?

And why would they pretend to be part of a religion they don't believe in? Who does that sort of thing? Or do you think that they have to be non-xian because only non-xians would be immoral enough to a) be such awful people and/or b) lie about what religion they are to, what, make xians look bad?

It's obviously nonsense that these people could be non-xians, so the true/false, real/fake appellations when it comes to xians behaving badly are not only dishonest, but also downright hateful towards non-xians.

They aren't non-xians. They're xians. Real and true ones. Just because you don't like their behavior doesn't make them fake. It just makes them awful people, and no religion (or lack thereof) is exempt from having awful in it.

If anything, a big reason why these particular awful people are so out of control is because too many in the rest of their religion have spent way too long blaming others for the bad behavior, rather than accepting that it's a problem within their own religion that they need to deal with.

That's also why this "speaking out" is way too little, and way too late. They needed to confront this nonsense 40+ years ago. They didn't, and now they have a gigantic problem on their hands.

PS: Learn something from atheists. You know, plenty of us can't stand the mushy-headed nuttiness of Bill Maher, or the xenophobia of Sam Harris. We have disagreed, often vehemently, with some of the things Richard Dawkins or Christopher Hitchens would say or stand for.

What we don't do is deny that they're atheists when confronted with their bad behavior, because calling them "false" or "fake" atheists would be the height of dishonesty. Their being awful sometimes doesn't change either their atheism or what we believe is the correctness of their position on deities. It only means that, outside of their atheism, we accept that they can be as much of morons as anyone else. That's reality, something most atheists take great pains to face and deal with.

You don’t have to actually believe in a religion to go and pretend to be part of it. Greene and Flynn don’t have anything against lying. Besides, where better to set up your propaganda operations than these evangelicals? They'll believe anything.

but I fear Christianity has let this cancer grow for far too long. They've sat back in their pews for decades letting a lot of things fester, from money grubbing charlatans to theocratic fascists, and yet wonder why they're not taken seriously anymore by a significant portion of the population. They scratch their heads and wonder why their numbers are dwindling while "nons' are growing.

It is good that they want to mold and direct their religion towards socially-responsible, compassionate values.

However, like many others, I bristle just a bit at the designation of "true Christians". Despite the protestations of some that "Christianity is not a religion" because it sprang from God's actions towards humans, i.e. Jesus sacrificing himself to provide salvation, rather than people following certain practices to court God's favor and somehow earn salvation, when everything is said and done, Christianity is a human endeavor.

Human beings practice it, human beings define it and human beings promulgate it.

they themselves often use the buybull to justify.

There is not much that is 'liberal' and/or tolerant about some of those beliefs.

As a mixed race black woman myself I utterly refuse to put my entire Democratic Party-voting (let alone the Rethug-voting ones) racial cohort into some nearly untouchable bubble, immune from criticism.

Growing up in London, some of the first and most virulent homophobia and misogyny I encountered was from Africans and also West Indians, including some from my mum's side of my family (mummy is from Barbados), especially back on Bim. Other Caribbean islands and their diasporas are just as bad (certain parts, to a degree), if not worse than Bajans, and some (obviously not all) Africans take it to insane levels.

The idea of it was created in the late 1800's and evangelical churches "say" its not required to believe in it. But if you point out the crazy interpretational gymnastics, they go nuts on you.

Prior to its introduction, the rapture was never mentioned nor even a teaching of the Apostles. And quite frankly, it goes against the teachings of the time. It's a new "interpretation" that has very little merit. Of course, I also point out that the Apocalypse of Peter was once listed as one of the books of the Bible from the very earliest lists (and the Gospel of Thomas found in Egypt is likely the earliest copy from the Apostles), but they get very red faced....how dare I present historical facts.

You are joking, surely?

False? Yes!
Prophets, never!
Clowns, rabble rousers, hate mongers, manipulators, insane people, maybe. But prophets?

Who bestowed that title on them?

My response to someone who wants a serious label put next to their name as their public image is always the same . . . Show me who you are, don't tell me who you want me to think you are!
Really, are people that gullible?

TFG fell over at that hurdle early on, with some of the self-proclaimed descriptors he came out with. "The Apprentice" days, actually.
Same for a lot of Republican politicians.
And now, Elon Musk.
