The fact and do nothing to prevent crime. Primarily day to day they hunt for expired car registrations, roust houseless, and shoot your dog if you ever are unfortunate enough to get a visit from them for any reason.

like me would be murdered for not following custom if there was no law and order. The leading cause of death after childhood disease was murder back when we all lived in villages of 150 people. I recommend the book 'Better Angel's of Our Nature' by Steven Pinker for more on how much safer we are from violent crime these days, and all around the world. That doesn't mean the police can stop all crime but they try.
