If you had any illusions that Elon Musk is really prepared with his ideas for monetizing

Twitter...

Here he is asking a Twitter user who's been putting videos on YouTube, "How does YouTube monetization work & what could Twitter do better?"

How long has Musk been thinking about buying Twitter and competing with other platforms? How long has he been thinking about monetizing content and paying creators? And he never bothered to find out how YouTube monetization works?

Either he's incredibly ignorant and ill-prepared, or he's well aware of YouTube's monetization and he's just pretending to be a billionaire of the people who wants to get his users' feedback and learn from them. (Which is a foolish pose if he is prepared and already has definite plans that their suggestions are likely to conflict with.)

Is this a joke? People liked Twitter because if was brief and they could easily scroll their feed. Freethinker65 Nov 2022 #1

Glad I deactivated.

Twitter users could always provide links for more in depth supporting info and/or commentary. Who in their right mind would let mercurial Musk to host their long form content and who on Twitter would have time to watch it?

That's why we need to cut his taxes. Otherwise, we wouldn't benefit from his genius.

In fact, we should offer him or first born children as a sacrifice to his brilliance.

But no way I am ever using twitter with that fascist, antisemitic/ racist creep in charge. I have 0 illusions, he is a con artist like dump. I almost never used it before and never read stuff unless it was posted elsewhere.

Twitter currently serves as an effective shop window for video content from a variety of other platforms. It already embeds YouTube videos, and loads of comedians etc. (some professional) put up TikTok videos or host them on other sites or Twitter itself. That's not to mention the porn sites etc. that offer teaser clips plus links to longer or more explicit content. How does he propose to compete with the latter - will Twitter Blue Really mean Blue Twitter, even more than it does now?

Those platforms already have their financing, copy protection etc. models in place along with paying userbases and plenty established talent, so he's going to have to beat their offers, not to mention possible pushback for potentially starting a series of turf wars.

This also changes Twitter's use case. Its short-form nature has meant that people can dip in and out, between work tasks for instance, rather than settling down for a long watch or read or listen (or whatever, in the case of the porn). Plenty of other sites offer longer-form content - video, written, audio or whatever - and some of them have gotten pretty good at it and actually have some user loyalty, which is another concept Musk is going to need to learn about pretty damn quick, and the synergy that comes from having similar content organized, advertised and searchable on one convenient site.
