The Biden administration is privately encouraging Ukraines leaders to signal an openness to negotiate with Russia and drop their public refusal to engage in peace talks unless President Vladimir Putin is removed from power, according to people familiar with the discussions.
The request by American officials is not aimed at pushing Ukraine to the negotiating table, these people said. Rather, they called it a calculated attempt to ensure the government in Kyiv maintains the support of other nations facing constituencies wary of fueling a war for many years to come.
The discussions illustrate how complex the Biden administrations position on Ukraine has become, as U.S. officials publicly vow to support Kyiv with massive sums of aid for as long as it takes while hoping for a resolution to the conflict that over the past eight months has taken a punishing toll on the world economy and triggered fears of nuclear war.
While U.S. officials share their Ukrainian counterparts assessment that Putin, for now, isnt serious about negotiations, they acknowledge that President Volodymyr Zelenskys ban on talks with him has generated concern in parts of Europe, Africa and Latin America, where the wars disruptive effects on the availability and cost of food and fuel are felt most sharply.

(47,140 posts)He cannot win militarily so he will win by bullying the world to force Zelensky to surrender.
The world is being very foolish, this will only embolden Putin and he will know he can
take whatever he wants, he will force his will on everyone.
Russia will be unstoppable.
China, Saudi, Iran, North Korea will follow suit.
China will invade Taiwan and get away with it by threatening all kinds of consequences to the US.

(32,778 posts)Concerns in part of EU? France, Italy, Spain since the beginning of the war have tried to push for peace. Putin is a bigger threat to them than he is to the US..they know this. Guess they forgot their history.
Or..maybe the US is trying to remind those countries, there is no dealing with a terrorist. President Zelensky made many overtures early on and Poopin ignored him. Poopin will continue to ignore President Zelensky until the orcs are driven out
