Quitting Twitter

After ten years on Twitter, I am deleting my account. When I first joined the platform, it was a tool for making connections between people in my hometown and our sister city in Italy. It was an accessory to other networking tools like a website and a LinkedIn account. At that time it wasn’t political, at least to me. I never imagined a deranged president using it to make edicts or fire public servants disloyal to him. I didn’t realize that global bad actors would weaponize it.

I made some great friends on Twitter even though I will probably never see them face to face. With the emergence of Trump, it went from a public plaza to a battleground. Trolls, bots and some very nasty people began to litter the Twitter landscape. The management of Twitter acknowledged some of its problems and took steps to correct them. Banning Trump was a pivotal moment and, for a while, Twitter seemed a less toxic place.

I have no idea why Elon Musk, with some Saudi backing, would buy Twitter and promptly destroy it. He is an asshole but not an idiot. Whatever he has in mind, I want no part of it. Some say we must stay and fight but I think that is folly. It’s Musk’s playground and not a level playing field. If you’re on Twitter you are an Elon Musk asset. He owns your eyeballs and everything you share on Twitter.

I joined Democratic Underground over twenty years ago, long before Twitter came to dominate social media. To me it was the perfect forum with many great contributors on many topics. Even before I joined as a member, I submitted articles and was elated when they were published. DU had some very gifted contributors, many of whom went on to be widely followed bloggers.

DU has always been a comfortable place, one I would turn to for advice and support. I vividly remember the horror of the 2016 election night attack that took DU down for several days. It was a surreal harbinger of what the next four years would bring. I took it very personally.

With the advent of Twitter, too many DU posts were just regurgitated links to Twitter threads. My DU posts became very infrequent. Although DU was my favorite source of information and advice, it became less interactive for me. I still use DU as a news aggregator. It’s often out ahead of Twitter when a big story breaks.

With Twitter out of my life, I hope to be a more active member of Democratic Underground. Hopefully more here on DU will kick the Twitter habit and we will see fewer links to that now highly unreliable platform.

An I agree that we have way too many Tweet-posts here on DU. I think it's a lazy way of creating a post, when almost always it's possible to click through to the original source of the news story.

More DUers need to learn how to do that - click through to the original story and post that rather than the tweet of the story.

For all the complaints here about FB, Twitter always got a free pass for some reason and it arguably caused more harm.

I am not on Twitter. I check it occasionally to find out scores of college games (hockey and softball) that can't be easily found on ESPN and that's about it.

By using twitter as an intermediary we are also allowing them to be a gatekeeper as well as amplifying or damping topics they don't like.

I hardly used it. DU and Facebook are my only social platforms. I get my latest and greatest political news right here on DU. I keep my FB account pristine, unfriending, blocking, and hiding degenerate assholes. Mostly FB is where I stay in contact with highschool, college, and Buddhist friends.

There is nothing helpful or joyful about letting angry hate and fear mongers contaminate my peace of mind.

I quit when I first heard about Musk’s intentions. For a short time, it seemed the deal was falling through. At that point I rejoined because some commenters and high profile Democrats have interesting things to say. As soon as I learned the purchase was happening, I left for good. My month-long waiting period ended Friday. I’m fully gone. I don’t want to be numbered among the accounts-the assets, if you will-of Mr. Musk.

I MISS Twitter so much. I love the ability to curate what I see and who I follow. I'm glad some DUers are still posting Twitter links so I can live vicariously through their accounts

I guess it's only as unreliable as the people you follow and like all social media it makes sense to be discerning and fact check as needed. I mean I've seen some pretty unreliable stuff posted on DU, it just comes with the territory.

(unless DU is considered to be social media). I’d like to claim it’s because I saw the looming danger in such sites; their ability to spread disinformation, inflame hatred, and influence our politics for the worse. But that wouldn’t be true.

What turned me off in the very early days was people sharing every mundane detail of their lives. “I’m going to get a sandwich.” I’m getting out of my chair.” I’m walking to the kitchen.” I’m opening the refrigerator. . .” I had the same feeling when cell phones first started to become popular. I don’t know how many times I heard someone say into their phone, while blocking the grocery aisle, “Guess where I’m calling from.” I don’t freaking care! I just want to get to the Cheerios!

Yes, I’m a curmudgeon. But I was right, if for the wrong reasons.

For a short while.
There was a reunion for my wife's grade school. All the information was on a FB page.
So, we joined just to send rsvp, let other friends know she was coming, etc.
2 weeks later, we went. The next freaking day the guy whose house hosted it starts sending anti-Obama & Democrat hating junk.
2-5 times a day. After 3 days I unfriended him, but then his friends join in on the page and right at us.
I closed the account before a week.
DU is the only other place I've had an account.

Their goal is to own your eyeballs and your time. (translation: your life)

DU doesn't use an algorithm to decide what so send your way. It's PEOPLE, damn good ones.

re your comment about some Saudi backing, Alwaleed Bin Talal is the 2nd biggest investor, with Larry Ellison 3rd. Just sayin', cuz in past years Bin Talal has been the 2nd biggest shareholder of Fox News, too.

Might as well know the individual investors that Musk has pitched (thousands of institutional investors are on board, too).

I’ve been lurking on DU for a decade at least. Had an account before 2016 but people reported me for having the gall to say that Clinton might lose.

I wanted to delete it before he blocks the ability to do so, as my guess is at some point he will sell the data, especially if he implements ID verification as most other big data mining social media platforms have done. Remember when Facebook & Cambridge Analytica worked together to triangulate IRL individuals & their social networks so they could be influenced for elections? Twitter has a decade of virtually untouched data for that.

Also, once anonymous logins are gone - which he has promised to do - I'm gone anyway, as I need to keep my family safe.

But in the meantime, I still belong to communities who truly feel they have no other options. Communities such as Trans Twitter, Queer Twitter, Autistic Twitter, Disabled Twitter, Neurodivergent Twitter, and so on. And please, please, please don't respond with, "You should try Mastodon | Discord | etc etc". The communities I am part of are still trying to figure out what will work for them and right now none of the alternatives are a good fit. Some even have adaptive devices tied to Twitters API. And the alternative platforms are small, clumsy and do not replace the connections between communities that helped their members thrive.

So, I'll be deleting soon is my assumption. I've been losing around 30 followers a day, mostly mutuals. The communities that made Twitter a powerful anti-fascist tool are falling apart as we speak, and I must assume burning that down wordwide was a big part of the investment decision.

I am guilty of cross-posting here with Twitter. I used it to follow some of my favorite political voices - Marc Elias, Mueller She Wrote, Jeff Tiedrich, The Real Horseman, George Takei, Mark Hamill, Sheldon Whitehouse, Biden of course...

I deactivated before the musk takeoover.

I have set up accounts on CounterSocial and Mastadon, but have yet to find them useful or find any of the above.

While I reflexively go to check twitter, I find with all the other available higher quality news sources, including podcasts, I easily lost dependence on it and have reclaimed much time.

I don't miss the cacophony it brought into my life. I am trying to balance my exposure rn anyway - bracing.

Like you, i refuse to give musk my eyeballs and feed his outsized adolescent ego.

Just one example, attorneys & law professors who analyze court filings & decisions. It gives me access to high-quality (vetted) legal analysis for FREE, with links to the court docs without paying PACER fees.

That's just one example. Because of my background in intellectual property licensing I also use it to follow new trademark filings & court cases involving intellectual property, which in this digital age is a truly fascinating & rapidly-changing field of law that could have implications on digital content distribution that I'm finding about 99.9% of people aren't even aware of.

There's no other platform where I can get that all in one place, & that's only about 10% of what I use Twitter for.
