How is this any different than a poll tax or a competency test?
Once the dust settles on Wednesday and Democrats carry the day, we need a national effort at truth and reconciliation starting with arresting that fucking motherfucker in Merde-a-Lardo.
Republicans sue to disqualify thousands of mail ballots in swing states
Republican officials and candidates in at least three battleground states are pushing to disqualify thousands of mail ballots after urging their own supporters to vote on Election Day, in what critics are calling a concerted attempt at partisan voter suppression.
In Pennsylvania, the state Supreme Court has agreed with the Republican National Committee that election officials should not count ballots on which the voter neglected to put a date on the outer envelope even in cases when the ballots arrive before Election Day. Thousands of ballots have been set aside as a result, enough to swing a close race.

Yes harsh consequences for non compliance.
Yes it is very hard to see America go back 100 years and change so drastically.
All of the hard won fights of the 20th century simply erased.
To see this happen, and lose democracy is heart breaking.

(4,298 posts)Is it illegal to give voters pre-dated envelops with the election date stamped on them?

(10,024 posts)Most states date stamp ballot envelopes when they arrive. If the ballot is signed and dated, that should be enough. Someone needs to sue to get these ridiculous requirements that are meant to prevent peoples votes from counting overturned.

(63,216 posts)The date isn't certified in any so the voter could put any date from the beginning of time to the end, and it would make no difference.
Unless a Republikkkan is making the decision, of course.

(21,362 posts)Where is the proof that thousands of ballots have been set aside? Wife and I filled out mail ballots and the instructions are very clear.
With that said, why the fuck should ballots be disqualified if the stamp has been canceled by the post office? Isn't that proof when the ballot was mailed?

(16,111 posts)calendar date. I always have to look at my phone or my calendar. It is a piece of information my brain has decided isn't vital to my life.
My husband finds this hilarious, but that's big talk for a man who can't find things he set down a few seconds ago. That's the kind of thing my brain decided was important.

(1,766 posts)When I was a postal worker, the last thing I wanted to do was interfere with the mail in any manner, even if I disagreed with what I had to process--and I processed literally tons of GOP mail that I found abhorrent.
Doing something so fricking stupid wouldn't have merely cost me my job--a well-paying job for an idiot like me, but could have also resulted in prison if I'd tried it.
It's the rare postal worker who doesn't take their oath and obligations seriously, so stop insulting those who work there by accusing them of corruption, unless you have evidence of it.

(10,192 posts)After W's Daddy had handpicked 2 Supreme Court justices, W asked those same justices to Stop counting ballots in Florida. And they agreed to NOT count ballots in Florida. And W won.
If they had counted all the ballots, W would never had been our drunkard president.
So the GOP go to is to NOT count ballots. This BS that they signed the wrong way or dated it the wrong way, is bureaucratic BS to prevent the counting of ballots when the GOP is losing.
And that's the good news. The GOP are losing. Early voters are voting against them and they have to get people to stop counting ballots to prevent Dems from winning.

Voting is something we do once or twice a year, and the way most adults are rushed, frazzled, tired, and other reasons, I can see many ways that they can miss something. And the vultures wait to peck away at the ommissions, the signature, the date, just whatever they can attack.

(994 posts)When you vote by mail, especially with the current GOP mindset, you need to read and follow every single instruction to insure your ballot is counted. And I would hope most voters do. Some of the instructions may be confusing but if you are voting, you need to figure it out. Does this all need to change? Of course but that is another battle (sadly one of many)

(1,766 posts)People needed to be told that cooked food might be hot.
Or that an ocean could be dangerous to get in.
Or that small items could cause children to choke on them if swallowed.
And yet, despite all of the signs and labels warning about those things, people STILL ignore them or aren't as careful as they could be about heeding them.
I used to forget dates on checks sometimes. It happens. People might be busy or distracted or just plain nerve-wracked when filling out a ballot. Sometimes when you don't feel well, you aren't as "dot every i, cross every t" as you could be. I turned in a paper in college when I was undergoing cancer treatment. I forgot to put my name and the date on it. My professor came back--is this you? I forgot to include all that because I felt like utter crap, and merely wanted to get the assignment turned in.
So there are plenty of understandable reasons for people to forget or make a careless error. It happens. Because we're all human.
Rather than being contemptuous of them, try a bit of compassion. It tends to go much further than ragging on them.
DallasNE
(7,403 posts)It is not reliable. It could be affixed by anyone handling the envelope. It could even be tampered with. The date has no security. It is a joke that is even more useless than a photo ID (how many voters have been turned away because the names don't match aside from those with additional documents showing a name change such as a marriage license).

(3,818 posts)You had to pay cash in order to vote. A competency test was just that - you had to pass whatever test was put forth in order to vote. It could involve guessing how many jelly beans (or pinto or black-eyed peas) were in a jar to an actual history or some such test.
This is what is know as voter suppression and it involves all voters, not a particular class or group, just absentee ballots from across a broad spectrum.
