On Monday, the Justice Department announced that it would send federal monitors to 64 jurisdictions nationwide to monitor how elections are being conducted. Miami-Dade, Broward and Palm Beach counties were all slated to receive federal monitors from the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division.
But Brad McVay, the chief counsel for the Florida Department of State, said in a letter issued late Monday that those monitors would not be allowed inside polling places under Florida law.
McVay said the Florida Secretary of States office which Republican Gov. Ron DeSantis oversees would instead send its own monitors to those three counties, which are among the most Democratic-leaning counties in Florida.....
FBI special agents serving as election crime coordinators will also be on duty in the bureaus 56 field offices to receive voting-related complaints from the public, according to the Justice Department. Employees in the Justice Departments Civil Rights Division will also operate a hotline all day on Election Day, answering calls from people who spot possible violations of federal voting rights laws.

(9,132 posts)I doubt he's covering up cheating.
What he is doing is signalling MAGA. DeSantis isn't as crazy as Kari Lake. He's not going to go full, "It's all stolen and invalid and we should burn it down!" It's not his style. What he wants is to say, "Hey election deniers, see how the federal government really wants to get involved here? And I'm the only one standing up to them!"
By being difficult and resistant, he's sending a nice big wink towards those who are inclined to believe conspiracy theories about federal interference in state elections.
And it gives him plausible deniability. While he's getting the message across to Trump's loopier base, he can claim he's standing on state sovereignty. It's not about a political message, it's about the principles of the law!
That's why this guy worries me in 2024. He's a lot brighter than Kari Lake or Trump. They're all hammer. This guy's got a swiss army knife.
