This is how "effed" up my once great state of Ohio is

For the first time in my 60+ years in this earth, I am going to root for the Michigan Wolverines to roll into Columbus and beat the ever-loving piss out of the Buckeyes.

Ohio is a red hellscape because of three things, and three things only - racism, hatred and misogyny. I'm looking at you, my own brother...my brother-in-law, my sister-in-law, my nephews and nieces. I've seen it and heard it at family get togethers from holidays to funerals.

It's NOT "economic anxiety". You'd be hard-pressed to find a state that has benefited more economically from Democratic policies than Ohio. For example, thousands of job just announced from a new factory outside Columbus is due the Joe Biden's CHIP Act. A bill that 95% of Retrumplicans opposed.

My own brother, who recently died twice in an ambulance on the way to the hospital, had his life saved by doctors and nurses in the ER, but his financial security was saved because Ohio expanded Medicaid under the Affordable Care Act. That's right! The very bill that President Obama and Speaker Pelosi knew would cost them 60 House seats helped save my brother from homelessness and financial ruin. He acknowledged that help from Democrats by kissing Donnie Dipshits and JD Vance's ass.

And the misogyny? Well, I know Ohio and it is a lot like my family. There are a lot of Dipshits in Ohio that still view women with a 1950s or 1850s view towards their role in society. Now, Ohio is not alone in that, but there are a shit ton of testosterone, mullet-headed Neanderthals who will profess their respect for women in public, but privately want women to be subservient to them.

I know one women in my own Ohio extended family that made the choice to end her pregnancy when she was younger, stupid, in college with her whole life in front of her. She now not only votes for, but actively works to elect politicians that want to require 10 year old victims of rape to carry their rapists baby to term. That's NOT "economic anxiety", that's "Fuck you- I got mine"

The worst people in the world are those that can only make themselves look good by making other people look bad. They can only justify their values by attacking the values of others.

You can't reach these people. They have to hit rock bottom before they seem the light, and in the case of my brother, even rock bottom is not enough.

That's why I say; "Fuck all things Ohio until they get their shit in one sock"

And our Democratic Secretary of State and Attorney General have good leads with 84% of the vote counted.

Thank goodness my family is not like this but I know and had way too many former "friends" or guys I worked with that are just as you are saying. Racist, mysogynist, homophobic, gun lovers that for whatever reason hate Democrats and liberals with a severe passion even though they will jump at the chance to accept help from them if it is of benefit. Then, they carry on with their own gullible idiotic ways and bash Democrats some more. Every time I see a bumper sticker bashing Democrats, women, BLM etc. I just want to take a tire iron to their vehicles but I dont.

It's maddening to say the least. But I love where I live, all our family is here so we stay. Best wishes to the OP

.

They are the most self-affecting of the conservatives. They preach about personal liberties, but what they mean are THEIR personal liberties. If others benefit from it, it's purely by chance. They plug into every government program available and view anything they get as "deserved" and any program they can't tap into a "tax" that they somehow are paying.

Republicans also tap into the very socialism they decry. Because when you only care about your self, it becomes a "me, me, me" philosophy they follow. They don't want to be seen as a moocher or beggar, so they cry they are against the programs to deflect attention away from the fact that they are moochers and beggars.

And yes, there are a bunch of people who like to take from other states while at the same time shitting on their programs and infrastructure. Much like the child who sees another kid with a toy and then breaks it so he can feel happy he screwed the other kid over and brought the other kid's enjoyment of life down.

All too true, unfortunately. It’s a shame. This state was great at one time, and still has so much potential that is going to waste because of the elevation of violent ignorance, male chauvinism, racism, homophobia and bigotry.

Hard to believe we once elected people—genuine American heroes—like John Glenn to represent us. It’s awful that we will now be represented by a carpetbagging shithead like JD Vance in the Senate who should have been the laughingstock of the year.

But so many Ohioans are as disgusting as tools like Vance and Gym Jordan. These are the same people who see themselves in Trump and have lionized him. Loudmouthed, ass-backwards bigots. Fuck them.

I can’t believe what a disaster yesterday was for this state. The thought of Dewine and Vance actually winning is too much. Three right wing Supreme Court Justices! I don’t think there is hope for the situation. To say nothing of the issues passing. Dangerous times in Ohio for sure. I would add greedy, selfish, a high percentage of uneducated, racist and quite possibly inbred folks to your list. Michigan pulled it out and PA got Fetterman. I am so happy for those people. We didn’t get one bone yesterday! ( I know you had racists but we definitely have two scoops of that!)

Both are industrial legacy states with large legacy cities (e.g. Detroit, Pittsburgh, Philly). Both have large swaths of rural lands.

Ohio isn’t Indiana. We don’t just have one large urban area (Indianapolis) but several of them around our state. No reason why our state Democratic contingent shouldn’t be much stronger and more competitive than it is.

Demographics and culture trends are undeniable factors that haven’t worked in our favor, but there’s more to it than that. This is also a management and competency issue within the Democratic state party.

Did anyone outside of Dayton even know who Nan Whaley is? She should have been well known and campaigning regularly with other Ohio big city mayors and city council leaders around the state.

This is a major problem and a massive fail on Ohio Dems part. It’s utter and complete ineptitude and incompetence.

Here’s a novel solution: Ohio Dems need to build and maintain an inter-city coalition. Columbus, Cleveland, Cincinnati, Toledo, Akron, Canton, Youngstown and Dayton should be connected and organized as a unit, and putting together a bench and slate of candidates for 2024, 2026, 2028 and beyond. It’s a practical way forward and ends the victim “woe is us” conversations. We might not win every election, every time against the undeserving, unworthy and stupid like Vance, but we will at least ensure that we don’t go down without a fight, and might actually beat back the red tide eventually.

To gun violence that killed people on the streets of Dayton. She came out swinging and at that time Dewine even said he would implement changes regarding guns in Ohio. He let time go by and refused to do a thing save implementing guns for all and carry wherever you like as long as it’s not the Statehouse. That little coward wouldn’t even debate her. We need rules for campaigning in the state. If one candidate refuses to debate the airtime should be given to the challenger. I did not see one Dewine sign. He did nothing to earn another term.

Michigan had gunmen enter their Statehouse and later attempted to initiate a kidnapping on the governor. I guess Ohioans didn’t have a big enough shock to wake them the hell up! Possibly we have to hit rock bottom first. Michigan Dems have a statewide plan to bring everyone along to better times. The women holding office are doing amazing things there

Ohio's Republicans in the Statehouse are lawless people many of whom have gotten away with crimes while in office and even gotten re-elected afterwards with no fallout. They only work for their pocketbooks.

Your solution involves people volunteering and we definitely need more of those. The League of Women Voters works 12 months a year. Dems seem to carry the cities. It is the people in the hinterlands that need to be reached. Trump flag after trump flag in front of places who clearly have nothing. Churches that preach ‘vote republican’ and outside money paying for disgusting TV ads that flood the minds of the ignorant are also problems. We have large obstacles to overcome and few organizers to do it. When Ohio turned for Obama we had people form all over the country working inside our state to make it happen. Maybe we need to organize an intervention for 2024. : )

I guess these women don’t care about the future of their daughters, sisters, granddaughters … they will not have the same rights to human dignity that these brainwashed women have enjoyed for the last 50 years. It makes me very sad to think they put Trump and love of money and white privilege ahead of their daughters’ human rights.

I’ve written grad level papers on the economics of ohio, and you are dead on about how the state has benefited from democratic legislation and politics.

My other place is in west michigan, and the state has delighted me today, and west mi has surprised me.
As for fort ball cannot ever pick a side. My daughter went to OSU for undergrad and grad.

My roots run deep in Ohio also, but I left in the 80's and never looked back. I still have family there, but rarely visit. I no longer recognize the state I grew up in and am so glad my parents didn't live to see the destruction of the state. I can't even imagine what my father would be ranting about having been a union guy all his life.

I'm in BIG BLUE MICHIGAN now and live near like-minded people and it feels so good to have that. Don't get me wrong. I can be in "red" territory in 15 minutes but I've always tended to do my shopping, working, volunteering, etc. in the neighboring blue, educated area.

Ohio will not change in my lifetime, so in retrospect, I'm glad I left years ago. We welcome our Ohio Democrats to come see or live in our state. It's really not that far away and we are surrounded by fresh water!

Yes, he was a Republican, but he was sane and fairly decent. He would be a pariah in today's Ohio GQP.

When I was at the Federal Building in Columbus to finish my paperwork for joining the Navy, I got in a elevator with Senator John Glenn.

He asked about me and my family. A week later, my mom got a handwritten letter from him in the mail wishing me well and thanking my mom for "her" service to the United States Navy. Today, John Glenn would have lost to JD Vance.

I remember him also. I always felt he was a decent person and governor. I blame the brain drain during the 80's for what's happened to Ohio. NE Ohio was always such a bastion of highly educated people and they left to find work elsewhere. That's why I left. Same was true for the Columbus area. I doubt I'd recognize Columbus outside of the university areas. Both of my grown children never went back to Ohio either. They are both very educated as is their father and me and we don't relate to the Ohioans that are left. I went back once for a reunion with four of my high school classmates and the proliferation of Trump signs made me puke. I never went back again. Those classmates were all stuck somewhere back in high school and I realized that I had nothing in common with them any longer.
