https://www.espn.com/chalk/story/_/id/34983440/california-overwhelming-votes-no-sports-bettingLOS ANGELES -- The most expensive ballot proposition gamble in U.S. history went bust Tuesday as California voters overwhelmingly rejected sports betting, shooting down initiatives by Native American tribes and the wagering industry.
The two groups raised nearly $600 million in competing efforts to expand gambling and capture a piece of a potential billion-dollar market in the nation's most populous state. But voters did not want a piece of that action.
Proposition 26 would have allowed casinos and the state's four major horse tracks to offer sports betting in person. The initiative bankrolled by a coalition of tribes would also have allowed roulette and dice games at casinos. A 10% tax would have helped pay for enforcement of gambling laws and programs to help gambling addicts.
Proposition 27 would have allowed online and mobile sports betting for adults. Large gaming companies would have had to partner with a tribe involved in gambling or tribes could have entered the market on their own. That measure was backed by DraftKings, BetMGM and FanDuel -- the latter is the official odds provider for The Associated Press -- as well as other national sports betting operators and a few tribes.

Add to that, a number of Indian Casino's have been mired in controversy. Using "disenrollment" (removing members from the active list of the tribe) to deny employment, share of the profits, etc. One casino near Fresno was stormed by one faction carrying semi-automanics to gain control of it. Long story short, the place was shut down for over a year until the courts could sort all of it out.
The state OK'd the casino's as a way to provide unemployment, improve their schools, etc. Unfortunately, some have caught the greed bug.

(9,849 posts)The thing that intrigued me was that two cards showed up in my mailbox. One against prop 26 and the other against prop 27. It sure looks like each proponent spent a major fortune running down the other, and they were both successful!
As always, be careful what you wish for. You might get it.
Just an observation. Id like to see a team named The Spread so that announcers can say: So and so team beat The Spread and confuse gamblers.
