Pro-life Rs simply could not accept this was really happening, desperately need to change the election's story line.

"Red wave" became a collective delusion. It obscured what had been happening in the election since Dobbs - elevated D intensity, Rs struggling.
Late promising D data - good polls, strong early vote - was dismissed. "Hopium" it was called.

...centrists compete to see which candidate is the better conservative; an anathema to Democratic party politics which is fueled by progressivism and a consistently liberal base of voters.
