From the day when the TFG mocked a disabled reporter, many of the now sitting members of Congress from the GOP embraced TFG.
They embraced the arch villain Putin just like he had. In fact they said they would cut aid to Ukraine while 14 million refugees from that beleaguered country search for a home while winter is coming. Two GOP Senators who were just returned by the voters to the Senate, spent a 4th of July at the Kremlin (Johnson and Kennedy).
They embraced voting restrictions, an abortion posse, immigrant shuffling, dont say gay and all the characteristic politics of the TFG. They mocked science and played with the lives of millions of their fellow citizens while the largest pandemic in a century reaped its way across the land.
Climate scientists are mocked too yet the data about the ice sheets should cause a responsible government to plan for the water that is on its way.
Luckily the voters caught a glimpse of the picture of the GOP Dorian Grey. Remember the below picture is who they really are behind the slogans, the billionaire funded think tanks and their media propaganda machine.

(10,434 posts)but racist, bigoted, small-minded, gullible idiots aren't going to stop being racist, bigoted, small-minded, gullible idiots.
They may be less vocal, the frustration of which might cause some to become more obnoxious or violent.
They've always been among us, and unfortunately probably always will be. Only the degree of their visibility changes.

But in an odd way, thatll probably help our side.
If he sticks around and runs for president again, he WILL peel off votes from whoever the GOP nominates. And the convention that year could be a mess.

(47,512 posts)He'll never give up until he finally strokes out or has a heart attack. He will become more and more pathetic as time passes.
Interesting point that all his desperate attempts to reclaim his "throne" will undoubtedly help Democrats. As each day goes by, he creates more and more enemies. Even the hardcore MAGATs will eventually move on to another faux Messiah or even forsake politics forever.

(1,138 posts)The US was extremely fortunate that during our first brush with authoritarianism, the Strong Leader chosen by the masses, and agreed to by the oiligarchs, was incredibly flawed. There were actually Republican leaders who refused to support Trump, and a small but significant number of Republican voters who didn't support Trump. On the Democratic side Trump's behavior is so over-the-top and often bizarre that he galvanized Democratic voters increasing the Democratic vote.
Trump wouldn't have been successful as a presidential candidate if he hadn't been born wealthy and well-connected. Probably any authoritarian candidate that the Republicans come up with won't have Trump's handicaps. Obviously the Republican leadership and billionaire supporters have been looking for a way to dump Trump without alienating their base. The cancer is still metastasized in the US body politic.

(10,252 posts)But when the oligarchs and corporations start throwing money at De Santis, or some other Deplorable, that's who they will line up behind to kiss ass. Now that they have gutted Roe, they will move on to their next culture war on LGBT and CRT and banning books. They haven't changed their spots. Theyb are still deplorable. We need to kick their asses big time in 2024.
Meanwhile lets work on a Fed anti-gerrymandering voter law, and outlawing dark money.

(1,670 posts)Don't forget that quote "You may forgive us but we wont be forgiven. There is rancor in our hearts which you little dream of. We hate you, sir." Joshua Chamberlain put in his diary. The complete swap of the parties from that era is very apparent, right down to the policies. Nixon chose to run on that rancor, and letting that djinni out of the bottle had consequences that could be foreseen. Kevin Phillips is still trying to soft-pedal his involvement, put he gave them the roadmap to misery.

Their rotten essence has come into full focus and stench. So, since TFG has lost (and lost, and lost again) they now are drawn to to despicable DeSantis. A man who is mean and sneering and also corrupt, modeled himself exactly after TFG, and is where he is BECAUSE of TFG, though now won't give him the time of day.
There will be a good number of them that continue to idolize TFG and all his emulators, but we the VOTERS must continue to stamp them out at the ballot box and send them packing.
The exhausted majority has had enough! Now if only Merrick Garland will finish off TFG as justice demands...

(7,850 posts)and us of Donald Trump but they chose a tax cut for the top 1% instead over the good of the people...they packed the courts with incompetent extremist judges to push their anti-women, anti immigrants, racist anti-voting rights agenda..they allowed their guy to separate families, cage babies, embrace despots, insult our allies, withdraw from global pacts/treaties, downplay the pandemic, sideline scientists/doctors in favor of quacks and hacks, disappear 300,000 covid deaths, encourage ingesting bleach/injecting disinfectant as a covid cure-all, disparage Gold Star parents, appoint his know-nothing children to positions of authority, choose gun proliferation while turning a blind eye to school massacres..
and when he attempted to extort Ukraine's Zelensky they had the opportunity to say no more and rid themselves of Trump but they chose to defend and exonerate him instead...and so he was free to set into motion a coup to overthrow a fair election, stay in power forever, incite an insurrection...and they could have rid themselves of Trump then but they did not..they chose to whitewash the horror or January 6, and insist it was Nancy Pelosi or Antifa that was responsible for the death and destruction of that day and make pilgrimages to Florida and beg forgiveness...
Trump is who they are: craven, power hungry, vengeful, racist/antisemitic authoritarians..no amount of ingested bleach will rid them of their monster..Trump is who they are..they own him...

(17,931 posts)making him far more dangerous. You are 100% correct. Republicans are still just as vile, fascist and hateful as ever, but their new standard bearer may appeal to some in the soft middle who couldn't bring themselves to vote for the orange moron. That worries me. We've got a lot of work to do before 2024. I fear once again the fate of our democracy will hang in the balance.

(10,020 posts)1. Republican voters completely approve of the policies of discrimination against LGBTQ, women, and minorities so they can maintain their white privilege and force their religious beliefs into law. They may change horses in future races, but their issues will remain the same.
2. Democratic victories were made possible by the number of younger voters who registered and turned out to vote.
Over the next two years, the national and state Democratic parties need to expand efforts to register and attract these voters. They are the ones most affected by a future where climate catastrophes threaten, where college has become unaffordable for many and predatory online colleges take advantage of students without offering a real education, and many are in independent contractor jobs with no benefits, preventing them from taking advantage of savings through 401k plans. Housing has also become unaffordable for them. We need to establish a presidential level advisory board made up of rotating groups of younger voters from every state. Each state party could do the same. These voters are our future. We should not ignore them and take their votes for granted.

(42,770 posts)ago Steve Bannon told FG - I think I can get you elected, however you would have to kowtow to the religious right? FG said, sure, I can do that.
I think these constituents still believe crazy. But even they know ( maybe even subconsciously) that he has reached his baggage capacity.
