Regarding the debt limit issue, and this WaPo opinion piece

The author argues below to deal with this via reconciliation before the next Congress is seated.

My question is: why? Why on earth waste that precious time on something where we'll likely have to give Manchin something he shouldn't get. Why not wait til next session, when we will almost certainly have an additional senator?

The article is dated today, so the author know Dems won the Senate.

Democrats should take these risks off the table by raising the debt limit in the lame duck, by whatever means necessary. If too few Republicans are willing to help, Democrats should use the reconciliation process, which allows them to pass certain types of legislation through the Senate with a bare majority vote, to increase the debt limit substantially. This would eat up precious floor time in the final weeks before the 117th Congress goes out of business. But there could hardly be a more urgent matter than preventing the global financial instability that could result from even partial U.S. debt default.

Isn't reconciliation a process that bypasses the House? nt intrepidity Nov 2022 #5

The point of doing it before this Congress expires is that a GQP House will gleefully stonewall and generate a debt default. And it still looks like the GQP is getting the House.

It'd gonna need to happen no matter how Georgia turns out. Do it now while the House is still for sure in Dem hands.

Just my opinion.

It makes it possible for a simple majority the Senate to pass a bill but the House also must pass.

You cannot eliminate the debt ceiling with reconcilliation but one can increase the ceiling so that it will not be an issue for this next couple of years.
