What about later?

In a hypothetical 51 (D) - 49 (R) scenario, (a) would her importance be diminished and (b) how might this affect her calculus; add the scenario tmsongs suggests, i.e., Gallego is positioning to primary her in 2024, might she bolt?

She may have more to gain both politically and personally by playing this game.

Set herself for lobbying in two years time

Start being more compliant with the Dems. The degree of cooperation largely depends on whether Warnock can win. If he does and it's 51-49, then this will help a lot.

It remains to be determined if this rumor pans out to be true, but I'm intuiting it's in the works.

The source of that gossip was on a twitter post here on DU, which I read yesterday. I don't have it bookmarked or remember the twitter account, or who posted it here, sorry.

Some people worry that Manchin will become a Republican. In the current balance of parties, that will not happen. He would switch parties only if the Democrats have a large majority or the Republicans have a large majority. He is in a maximum position of power right now and he knows it. The Democrats have to kiss his ass to keep him. If he switches parties he will become just-another-Republican.

At present, he is a 'loyal' Democrat.
