Nancy could remain as Speaker

Each party nominates a candidate for Speaker. If enough Rs refuse to vote for McCarthy, Nancy could be reelected as Speaker simply by having every D vote for her. The Speaker is elected by a simple majority.

some GrOPer. And a majority of the votes cast is required, not a plurality. They all know this; they will not merely abstain and allow Pelosi, or any Dem, to gain the position.

4. She can't win a majority without a few Republican votes or a fair number of republicans not voting

If no candidate gets a majority, they just keep voting until someone does.

Pelosi might get more than anyone else if republicans split their vote, but she can't get a majority as long without a few Republican votes or enough republicans not biting do that the democratic votes are an actual majority.

So eventually, one of the republicans would drop out and they'd agree to vote as a bloc as usual, giving the remaining republican an actual majority.
