GOP Discontent Simmers Amid Disappointment Over Midterm Results
(Bloomberg) -- Congressional Republicans returned to Washington this week adrift and questioning their partys leadership after falling far short of expectations in the midterm elections.
Finger-pointing over results of last weeks balloting spilled over into this weeks party leadership elections in both the House and Senate. Adding to the turmoil is a widening rift over the influence of former President Donald Trump, who is expected to announce a comeback bid for the White House on Tuesday night.
Before a caucus vote on Tuesday, House GOP leader Kevin McCarthy tried to tamp down a mutiny by a faction of conservative Republicans who were threatening to block his elevation to speaker next year when the party is expected to have control, though likely with one of the narrowest majorities in decades.
Some members of the far-right Freedom Caucus, which bedeviled the last two Republican speakers, have been trying to leverage their votes for changes to House rules that would give more power to individual members and committee chairmen. Representative Andy Biggs, a staunch conservative from Arizona, told Newsmax late Monday that he would challenge McCarthy.
