(47,539 posts)Don't care about Perry. I may try Kennedy Center with Joni Mitchel on PBS and then switch..
You deserve a break, too

(206,157 posts)However, it could prove interesting given today's breaking news - and this is the last show for awhile, it's listed as the "Season Finale..."

(206,157 posts)It was an interesting and thoughtful discussion - and they both had a sense of humor. And I also agree about New Rules, it was positive and encouraging.

(1,315 posts)I never watched Friends, and of course I've heard all the hype about Perry and his book, but at some level I couldn't care less but at least good for him if he's helping others.
Now Laura, I'm familiar with her and she's great (probably against DU sensibilities, but she's also really cute!). And Jonathan Haidt was SUPERB! Never heard of him but wow, such insights! Makes me want to read his book. He was SO spot on, really nailed it in so many ways. Wowzer.
New rules was good as usual. It's too bad the show is off the air for several months, it's become part of our Friday night routine.

(206,157 posts)I was a little disappointed that he didn't have more news related people on for such a breaking news week - but it turned out not to matter, I was not familiar with either on the panel, but I liked them both a lot. They had a thoughtful and interesting discussion - and they both had a sense of humor. And I couldn't agree more about Jonathan Haidt, I want to hear more from him, too!
And New Rules was also especially good - positive and optimistic, the best way to end the season. And I also agree that it's a weird time to end the "season," not sure if it has to do with Bill's schedule or it's an HBO decision - since John Oliver's show has its "Season Finale" this coming Sunday as well...

(53,994 posts)I have read a few, I do suggest picking one up and reading it. A few are dry and overly "statistical", but if you are into stats, you'll like it. He deals in facts, and some theories.

(1,315 posts)I checked out some of the reviews on Amazon for his "The Righteous Mind" and found them to be quite interesting, from both the 1-Star and 5-Star reviews. Of the few 1-Stars I read, none were over-the-top hit pieces, they were well-written and, as I've not read the book, could have put forward some good points.
Having said that (the phrase always brings to mind one of my favorite 'Curb Your Enthusiasm' episodes!), I must admit that although this is a book I would have relished 10-15 years ago, even if only to peruse, my appetite for such is mostly gone. At one point it felt good to be able to put forth an intellectual argument when defending my point(s) of view, and even learn more about those that were antithetical, but after the last ten or so years I find it to be a waste of my time... mostly preaching to the choir, which is fine, but I have few to preach to and time becomes more valuable after we discover we have less of it remaining.
Thanks again!

(1,324 posts)I especially liked the panel discussion of social media and mental health problems in kids. I dont know why this hasnt gotten more attention. Mahers closing remarks were spot on, and very funny.

(206,157 posts)I wasn't familiar with the panelists, but agree that it was an informed and thought provoking discussion - psychologist Jonathan Haidt was particularly good, they should have him on again. As for New Rules, they ended the season on an upbeat note, and agree that it was spot on. And I also appreciated the humor tonight, it was a very watchable show!
BTW, did you catch the Overtime segment? I regularly post it, but don't always remember to watch it, like tonight...

Didnt know about Overtime. Where do you find it? I watched your link, and Overtime was fantastic - informative and very funny. Say what you will about Bill Maher, but hes a master of the extemporaneous quip.

(206,157 posts)Since I know that a lot of DUers don't have cable - or HBO. I watch the show and then make the post - but Overtime is only available on YouTube so I often forget to watch it!
