...for the simple reason that it heralds a new phase in the investigation against Trump, and reinforces to the public that he's target of the DOJ prosecutions.
I'm thinking most people don't believe Garland would take this step unless he foresees the real possibility of an indictment in the future. We have a brand new, relatively young and vigorous prosecutor assuming an oversight role in the investigations who will reflect the diligence and commitment that the entire DOJ team is bringing to this effort with his own experience and dedication to his job.
Jack Smith wasn't brought in to be a potted plant. He may be the dynamism and focus these prosecutions need to get them into court.

(25,526 posts)I'm sure just the buzz of a "Special Prosecutor" is getting people excited.

Peace out.

(21,390 posts)about Jack Smith, if there ever was the perfect prosecutor to investigate Trump it would be someone who prosecuted corrupt politicians and war criminals. That fits Trump to a tee.
After having time to think about this. The seditious conspiracy crime is a tough crime to prove, takes time to get everything nailed down. I can understand if Smith spends most of his time on the 1/6 crimes.
On the other hand, the stolen documents, obstruction of justice are cut and dried crimes and the N.H. primary is in 14 months. I will be gleeful if the Mar-el-Loco prosecutions can be expedited. Trump will not show up to a grand jury in 14 months, he will be at a campaign rally in N.H.
There was no need for a special counsel, but once the move happened, Jack Smith is the man.

(12,423 posts)and I've got to say that you've been fair on this subject, I've disagreed with you on several occasions, and agreed with you on several other occasions also, and throughout the discussions on DU, you've been nothing more than respectful to others differing opinions, which is a testament towards your inclination to listen to reason.
Peace out

(21,390 posts)I respect your opinions. I get carried away, I know, but my bottom line is that I know that Merrick Garland is an honorable, patriotic man.
My worry has always been about time. I am against the pyramid strategy because I think it took too long to investigate (not indict) the planners of the insurrection. As I said, 14 months until the N.H. primary.
We can all celebrate and have a beer when the first Trump indictment falls. That's really what we all want. Honestly, I have morphed to the opinion that it may be too difficult to charge Trump with seditious conspiracy, I would be happy to nail him on the espionage Act and subsequent obstruction of justice. People understand people who steal.
I also am not a fanatic about sending Trump to jail, Lord knows he deserves it, I will be OK if that doesn't happen so long as he is banned from ever holding public office, including a dog catcher. He is a narcissist so convicting him of a crime or 2 will devastate him.

(3,876 posts)Nothing about this is positive at this point. Every day that scum is out, influencing and bullying congress, adding to his bank account is a slap in the face to Americans who believe in the rule of law.

(73,594 posts)Very few people here know of Jack Smith. But they do know of Trump, and obviously are unabled to see the connection between Trump announcing his 2024 run -- along with President Biden's plan to run for re-election -- and are unabled to understand the obvious connections.
