It took my breath for a while. We are more vulnerable than we realize.

(90,777 posts)Im only up to episode 3 or 4 and am already unnerved to discover that what I had always believed to be a flirtation with Nazism and Facism (if you recall, Charles Lindbergh was enamored of Nazism, the KKK was at its zenith, Henry Ford published antisemitic screeds in his company newsletter) turned out to be more like a mob-wedding, in which Nazism deeply infiltrated the halls of Congress.
It feels to me like we were saved from ourselves, but barely, by having to fight WWII.

(37,161 posts)"Their main beef with the Nazis was that they were the 'other team.'" That's why so many of these guys never met a RW dictator they wouldn't swoon over.

(37,161 posts)It refers to Rachel Maddow Presents: ULTRA, a podcast series launched by RM, that revisits internal fascist movements in the US in the 30s and 40s, including their direct cooperation with and support from the Nazi government, how these movements had lots of friends in high places, and how efforts to prosecute for crimes committed were thwarted by assorted political and legal maneuvers, up to and including turning the trial into such a circus that it dragged out to the point where the judge died and a mistrial was declared.
At least, that's the situation up to episode 7, as ep. 8 hasn't dropped yet.

FYI for people who use a podcast app, mine found it easily. So that's an option as well.

(13,924 posts)It sure does rhyme a lot.
Maddow is a great story teller of history in this podcast. I highly recommend it..
Plus it's free for the asking if you have a podcast app.

(47,324 posts)So no links sorry.
I only listened to about half of one episode.
I assumed it went to the end, but cannot vouch for that.

(21,620 posts)and already this is remarkable. what is remarkable about it is that this has been buried by history and nearly forgotten about. we should be learning about this in history in our classrooms, but i've never heard of any of this. our history books in WWII depicts the USA as a sleeping giant, until pearl harbor, when we then open a can of whoop ass on the nazis. our history says nothing about how Christianity was co-opted as an excuse to overthrow the government and put fascists in power here. "THose who fail history are doomed to repeat it". Those who are NEVER taught history won't fare much better. Add this to the Tulsa race massacre as events I'd never even heard of until recently. That is a disgrace. It's no wonder our democracy can be threatened so easily when we don't even know what a threat looks like.
It is obvious why Maddow made this. She didn't feel like just cluing us all in on some forgotten 1940s events. If you change all the names in this podcast... replace "christian Front" with MAGA, insert the names drumpf and bannon and guiliani as spreaders of propaganda to drive American to kill American...... and it is the EXACT SAME story.
It is a warning, of a test we almost failed. and we might still fail, if these traitors walk away free.

That's as far as I'll get with the spoilers.

(10,839 posts)Different perspectives from different people, of course, but I found the information hopeful, heartening. We've been here before as a society. We managed to push back the dark wave of authoritarianism. The pushback involved many people from all walks of American life, many forgotten to history. But as Americans, we managed to hold the line, not permanently but in the moment. We fought the Nazi lovers on the battlefield and we fought them on our own soil.
Now, we're in a very similar moment; the beast has raised its head again, not only here but globally and, as in the past, the fight goes on.
Are the details chilling. Absolutely. Maddow provided a look back which turns into a look forward. A cautionary tale, for sure, but also a reminder that democracy requires vigilant defense, one generation after another.
It's our turn to meet the moment.
