(25,983 posts)Keeping options open, I've signed up for the waitlist. It'll be interesting to check it out. I'm still reading on Twitter, but even when sticking to my home feed, the signal to noise ratio is becoming noticeably less pleasant. I haven't decided what to do yet, but more information sources are always a good thing.
The easygoing vibe on Mastodon is a pleasant change. It's fun but it is going to take a while to get used to new surroundings and to filter things to comfort levels.

(19,204 posts)handle the traffic coming their way? If Twitter breaks, or even if it doesn't, millions of people are going to want a place to go. Can any of them handle the influx of users?

(19,204 posts)I'd been thinking about it but elated I didn't. I think I'll let the others be as well. Right-wing assholes seem intent upon ruining every social media platform.
They'll never get DU. 😉

That's a platform ripe for cultivation by hackers and nation state actors.

Sonotype did a few reports about how most ope source communities are infiltrated with hackers and nation state actors injecting access points and vulnerabilities into the code. There is a fallacy that because it's open, other people review it. In reality, people use the code assuming others are policing it, and the only ones that do it are college academia and hackers.

But many of these shared media outfits just plug and go and allow vulnerabilities to expose client data.
That's why a few of the new social media sites were already hacked.

It's not users. It's firms that are too cheap to pay programmers and just grab free code off the internet and plug and go. Instead of performing code review, which is part of due diligence, they just run with it and expose their users to potential vulnerabilities.
It's also programmers who use OSS as a cheap deliverable to their clients or firms.
Open Source community is estimated by Sonotype to have over a billion vulnerabilities, so many that they can't even track.
Businesses and users of Open Source, who ignore these risks and don't perform reviews and rewrites are fools, verging on criminality by unwittingly exposing people to security risks above and beyond the pale.

Now, you mention those other platforms. The big firms. They probably did code review because an event damages brand.
