Prediction--neither Trump or DeSantis will be the 2024 GOP nominee...

...we'll see in 18 months, of course. But my guess is that Trump's issues will finally reach a critical mass, even if he isn't indicted. There's just too much shit to walk thru, even for most of his MAGA idiots. As for DeSantis--the man is the definition of an empty suit. God knows, the GOP has nominated empty suits before--see Dubya. But he had his family and their whole apparatus. DeSantis is more like the GOP's Ed Muskie--a "consensus" candidate who fell apart when it became apparent there was less to him than met the eye. The support for DeSantis is wide, but an inch thick. It will crumble at the first sign of trouble. Who will win the nomination? God knows. My best guess is, a dark horse like Haley. Definitely *not* Pence, whom nobody respects...

Trump 2.0. People know trump himself is toxic now, but they see a less offensive (so far) trump replica - down to copying mannerisms - in DeSantis. They LOVE the kind of stunt he pulled sending a plane load of brown people to Martha’s Vineyard. There’s no one else in the field who can deliver the trumpism they still want.

But, as you say, the support is shallow. Pence might as well stay home, no one on any side of any party likes him.

just to destroy the party that spurned him.

THAT fear almost guarantees, IMHO, that Trumpyshitstain is the Rethug nominee in 2024, unless he is dead by then.

The GOPer management consultants will keep tracking the death spiral of the Trump DeSantis wing of the party. If it's still bankable by 2024, it's Haley. If not, Cheney will spearhead the return of the Reagan Bush party.

Personally, I think that Trump will either be indicted or will be physically incapacitated or deceased before the primary is over. In any case, even the MAGATs seem to be bored with him now. They want a new trained monkey to entertain them. DeSantis has ‘evil sociopath’ down pat, but he has the charisma of a fruit fly.

The nominee really depends on who wins what’s left of the soul of the Republican party. It’s possible that they determine that the base is tired of their juvenile antics and they turn on Trump, resulting in a more ‘moderate’ set of candidates. Larry Hogan would be their best best, but he actually has some real principles; can’t have that. I think that they’d go with Glenn Youngkin, a complete phony who can talk a good moderate game but who can be counted on to support the billionaire overlords and the crazies when needed. God help us if that happens.

had not heard him described as an empty suit before. And - have to say it's hard to sell the idea that Rs will push for a person with strong positions and policy. Is that the Republican party we see today? It would appear that it's ALL about owning the libs from this perch.

Trump is fading, he can not sustain the energy levels he once did. Pence is certainly not a serious candidate because no one likes or respects him. DeSantis is a real danger, empty suit or not, he has all of the qualities needed to be a successful Republican Party leader. He is crooked, he is a liar and he has no moral compass or heart.
