The US supreme court justices history with the People of Praise raises questions about her impartiality in upcoming case

Former members of Amy Coney Barretts secretive faith group, the People of Praise, are calling on the US supreme court justice to recuse herself from an upcoming case involving gay rights, saying Barretts continued affiliation with the Christian group means she has participated in discriminatory policies against LGBTQ+ people.
The former members are part of a network of survivors of the controversial charismatic group who say Barretts lifelong and continued membership in the People of Praise make her too biased to fairly adjudicate an upcoming case that will decide whether private business owners have a right to decline services to potential clients based on their sexual orientation.
They point to Barretts former role on the board of Trinity Schools Inc, a private group of Christian schools that is affiliated with the People of Praise and, in effect, barred admission to children of same-sex parents from attending the school. A faculty guide published in 2015, the year Barrett joined the board, said blatant sexual immorality which the guide said included homosexual acts had no place in the culture of Trinity Schools. The discriminatory policies were in place before and after Barrett joined.

(6,265 posts)and in this court the corruption is absolute. TPOSFG along with Miller and other fascists played their hand perfectly. And here we are for a generation or more with these dangerous clowns. Geez...what a barrel of shit sitting on the highest court in the land. I remember reading about Hitler's kangaroo courts after he came to power. Interesting and terrifying reading about how courts are political tools for the fascists. This war with the fascists in this country is sickening and disturbing. At 74 I can see it will be unending.
TPOSFG let loose a lot of primarily pent-up white conservative rage, racism, sexism, and homophobia amongst people ripe for gaining the 'freedom' to exercise their hate openly. In this country, our democracy still has steel in its spine because we are powerful as of this time in American history. Let us exercise that strength by being open in this run-up to 2024 about what's really in store, for us, if the repthugs gain power again.

(9,076 posts)And it's perilously close to a religious test.
I have zero doubt Coney Barrett is anti-LGBT. I don't think that's even a question.
But open that door, "You can't be wholly allowed to serve in your office because of your religion . . ."
Sometimes it's better to think at least two steps through whenever propositions like this come up. Catholics should be at least vaguely familiar with the sentiments.
Things that sound nice (and are cost-free signalling) have ramifications that we wouldn't like as soon as they are directed at us.
"I think this atheist should recuse themselves from this case involving religion and churches, because I don't think they could be impartial."
See where that goes?

(11,100 posts)My faith teaches me to believe that all people are entitled to the equal protection of the law. Should that disqualify me from serving (if some President had been silly enough to appoint me as a justice)?

(344 posts)And what if a Catholic Justice didnt recuse on a death penalty case, and instead simply ruled against the carrying out of the death penalty, based on the teaching in the Catechism? I would be all for that. Im assuming Im among other anti-capitol punishment folks here, so I wonder what theyd think.

(2,860 posts)I know it won't happen, but she along with Alito and everyone else on the court who lied under oath to get there should be removed. They broke the law to get their jobs. We have too many 'injustices' on the court .

(344 posts)from a case involving capital punishment because of his/her faith affiliation? (Assuming they follow the catechism.) That would be interesting.
