In the weeks following Democratic Pennsylvania Lt. Gov. John Fetterman's win against Trump-backed celebrity TV doctor Mehmet Oz, Fox News has pivoted to a new narrative involving Fetterman's wife, Gisele Fetterman.
Essentially, the argument has been that Gisele is serving as her husband's puppet master who will effectively act as the real senator for Pennsylvania an idea driven by their belief that Fetterman's stroke, which left him with speech and auditory processing issues from which he is recovering, was actually somehow far more serious and debilitating than it actually was.
In an interview with The New Republic, Gisele Fetterman, a Brazilian-born philanthropist, dismissed those attacks.

I think it is really time for advertisers to pull there programming from this fascist misogyny racist organization....they cannot and will not put themselves in the shoes of others.....they mock people that have health issues...because if any of their family members or friends where to have a stroke or a heart attack.....what would they do.....go on camera and perform there BULLSHIT......why yes....its called a complete lack of empathy......they must have a daily meetings on the subject....no empathy.....

(9,090 posts)for liberals to stop ignoring rw radio.
fetterman won even though dems let penn st support 11 rw radio/oz stations Penn St. 11, Pittsburgh 2, Temple 1 without complaint! giselle could mention that and it would freak the cons out, making it worse. advertisers will freak out if they think penn state might do the right thing.
after what the republicans have done and allowed trump to do and the loss of Roe most elections wouldn't even have been close but dems ignore rw radio. when Americans wake up and give real attention to rw radio their advertisers will start a mass exodus that will force the ad industry to democratize the monopoly. without that wholesale repetition to support their lying fox 'news' will fall apart.
all giselle has to do is ask why penn sta supports radio stations that excuse LGBTQ hate and comfort the NRA and assault weapons.

(1,784 posts)...personalities "legitimize" really deviant and even violent political ideologies. These ideologies almost always start out on the margins and then move closer to the mainstream as they traverse the country, going from fringe internet sources to mainstream talk radio. You see it happen all the time: first, it's only people in white sheets saying these things, then it moves to fringe internet radio, then Real America's Voice (Steve Bannon) and Right Side Broadcasting, then LifeSiteNews and Church Militant, then OANN and NewsMax, and finally Fox News and the WSJ editorial page.

hosts, as if the republicans are truth-based. in miami dade the cons converted a major sports talk station a month before the elections, to scream "COMMUNISTAS!!!" to the cuban community
maybe dems are getting the message and recognizing republicans are doing the same.
but for english speaking RW, thinking mom and pop can compete with walmart is bad strategy. that massive monopoly has to be democratized with exposure with AI, pressure to get university and pro sports off those stations, and boycotts that will be much more effective with AI

(24,414 posts)the question is, what can we effectively do about it? I mean, other than trying to encourage advertisers and sponsors to withdraw their support?

(9,090 posts)MIT Media Lab already prototyped that - https://www.media.mit.edu/publications/radiotalk-a-large-scale-corpus-of-talk-radio-transcripts/
it can also be done small scale like described at fakenewsradio.org using free and low cost software and AI tools.
that should be happening to all major Ga talk stations, by warnock supporters and the dem party.
it is being ignored - there is no organized effort to monitor or challenge it. media is full of analysis that ignores the most important medium/factor in politics - the only unique advantage republicans have, the reason democracy's been regressing. it's the biggest political mistake in history.
all advertisers, ad cos, universities (like the 87 listed at fakenewsradio.org and many more) and pro sports teams supporting RW radio share responsibility for these mass shootings and now AI makes it MUCH easier to associate them with content. retroactive content too. they all deserve shame until they abandon it. before that happens tho the ad industry will have to break up the monopoly
then fox will fall apart

(5,644 posts)for a while to let the controversy die down and then get new advertisers.
Also they have advertisers like the MyPillow guy who can't be shamed.
They are a truly evil network but because of the 1st amendment, it's very difficult to do much about them except drown them out with facts.

(9,090 posts)talk radio is the wholesaler fox depends on to do the repetition needed to support the alternate reality they spew
they can't be drowned out with facts as long as fact-based americans ignore rw radio

(5,644 posts)but it's a huge problem. Getting broadband internet to everyone would also help because out in the country, a lot of people only have rightwing radio as a news option

(1,766 posts)Every cable/satellite subscriber pays a fee to carry Fox. In fact, Fox gets the highest per-subscriber fee of any cable network.
This is why I keep telling people that if you hate Fox and want to take them down, then CANCEL YOUR CABLE SUBSCRIPTION. Don't forget to tell the cable company why, either--namely that you refuse to support the propaganda and terrorism peddled on Fox. And on top of that, tell their advertisers how they have lost your eyeballs not only on Fox, but also across ALL cable channels, because they keep supporting the propaganda and terrorism on Fox.
Enough people do that, and Fox WILL either go under. Or change their ways.
Their choice.
Stop supporting them. Cut the damned cord.

I think Fetterman may need a bit of help with hearing, otherwise he can be just fine as a senator.

When he won his seat, some rw idiot wanted to know why Sen. Brown was kissing Connie Schultz. She shot back, "Because I'm his wife and if you'd research, you'd know that!" Words to that effect. It shut down that particular avenue of smear.

(15,740 posts)I think she'd be a great spokesperson to call out Fox News and the Republicans for the fascists they are, and to use that type of no-nonsense language.
Her husband can just say she's allowed to speak her mind (and use the Clarence Thomas excuse that his wife doesn't influence his decisions), while letting her bringing the needed heat to these traitors to America. She's smart, shrewd, and articulate, and could be pretty influential.

Give em hell, Gisele!
And Good Grief would it be great to add: hey, as Clarence Thomas would say about HIS wifes activities and outspokenness, his wife doesnt influence his decisions. If youre okay when she does it, then same thing applies to Gisele Fetterman. You cant say one is okay but the other is not.

(10,832 posts)The word empathy was the most dangerous word in the dictionary.
I remember this bc I was living in Tennessee at the time. There was an incident involving a TN resident whose home was allowed to burn to the ground while the local/private fire company and Chief watched. The man had not paid his fire insurance and though a neighbor offered to pay the annual sum on the spot, the Chief would not relent. Fortunately, the man and his family were not in the home at the time of the fire. Still, the incident caused quite a stink in the area and made the national news.
Beck felt the need to comment, a long harangue on 'responsibility,' that this was the way things had to be in our Brave New World despite any emotional reactions or empathy for the man or his family or his financial loss.
That was at least a decade ago (if not more). Empathy rejection has brought us to the present moment where crude/depraved accusations, comments and actions are a mainstay of the MAGAT crowd, where a 22-year old feels justified in shooting up a gay bar or jokes are made about an 82-year old man nearly bludgeoned to death with a hammer, etc.
This is why we fight. Because a world without empathy isn't a world worth saving.

(63,216 posts)And yet Liberals are called upon again and again to "empathize with" and "understand" and "reach out to" KKKonservatives.
No one ever tells KKKonservatives to empathize with anyone. Why not? Because they are incapable of it, either by congenital flaw, by years/decades of brainwashing propaganda, or by deliberate choice.

(11,588 posts)Many ordinary people aren't consciously using the web to investigate the who, what, why, and where of issues. They work, have daily lives and leave the 'big government' to others. Since the dawn of America's founding, 'the press' has become an institution in its own right--one that is terribly taken for granted.
This has provided the opportunity Roger Ailes, Rupert Murdoch, and others took advantage of. By disguising Fox News as a proper news program and bundling it into all cable packages across the country, sometimes not including competing real news channels, Fox became the default news program people tuned into when they sat down to catch the goings on in the country. Fox cleverly trademarked the slogan "Fair and Balanced" to reassure their none-the-wiser viewers.
We've all seen Fox News playing on screens at businesses we frequent. I complain and I am sure many of you do, too. It has often seemed that proprietors are taken by surprise, as though why would someone object?
As time has gone on Fox News, and all the right-wing radio and now social media platforms, dovetail to indoctrinate. This has been a huge success.
This cannot continue.

(5,125 posts)NOW to me, when you nominate and elect a President, you get the wife as a bonus and sometimes it's a real winner.
Although I don't agree with the terrible things done by the Reagan presidency, Nancy did her job, helped her husband fulfill his duties.
She wasn't worse than him for it.
Obama constantly let people know he valued Michelle's opinion, but it was obvious he could do things on his own.
Biden is so proud of Jill and she is multi-tasking like a champ.
BUT EVEN WITH HIS HEALTH ISSUES Fetterman has a track record of being someone who cares about the people who elect him and is effective if getting things done. AND if he picked Gisele, she must be amazing too. WIN WIN
