Ill die first.
Thats a powerful reason Im still there. Most news reporters check Twitter religiously. Id hate for a Reicht-wing message to be all they see.
Plus, the community we have built over a decade of relationships has value.

(102,292 posts)then it is likely "game over" for Twitter. Even if Google doesn't do likewise. I'm not registered on Twitter, but if I were, I'd probably just pop popcorn from the sidelines and watch how it all plays out.

(344 posts)The mobile site looks almost exactly like the app. Seamless conversion.
And so many are addicted to social media, thats what theyll do.
I dont think there are as many twitter addicts as there are Facebook addicts, especially among the older set who go there for endless phony family pictures and the latest gossip. But twitter will survive even without an app.

The ubiquity of Twitter (and its utility throughout the world) is dependent on mobile apps. Bottom line.

I say anything any one can do to damage twitter is a good thing.

(8,718 posts)So you want all the Dems to quit the largest site for world news. Twitter is not just about politics- its about connecting with your favorite writers, finding out the latest Covid, RSV etc news - people with common interests connecting - Obviously, many who are telling others to quit Twitter have never really explored Twitter. Its the biggest site for the NFT community to promote their art - thousands of artists rely on Twitter to showcase their art.
Thousands of people with Long Covid posting their stories, giving others support, posting what helped them.

(6,008 posts)... I deleted my twitter account because I never tweeted in the first place, all my account did was allow ol' musky to inflate his user numbers.
While it may make sense to stay on twitter, people should prepare for the end of twitter. I can't see how it can continue after 4 out of every 5 people leave in less than 3 weeks.
The amount of institutional knowlege lost is likely unsurvivable. It's not a matter of if this will cause problems, but when. The answer is not immediately, but likely sooner than you think.
People should be making contigency plans

Twitter is NOT the go to place as substitute, unless some other online cesspool of hate and misinformation is insufficient.
Why stay on Twitter? half the posts here would disappear, and no one would miss the vast majority of them.

I love all this hyperbole about fighting the good fight.
A few weeks ago everyone was proclaiming that they were quitting Twitter if musk or trump were part of it. Now that it has happened, people are making the excuse that they are fighting on the side of good by staying on that sickening platform.
At first I found all this funny as hell, but it is just sad now.

(2,739 posts)That's where I can have discussions with people who like to engage in the realm of politics, religion, media, society. I have friends there and I have people I support there.
I did start a counter.social account as backup. But I haven't used it much. And the founder, a hacktivist called The Jester, is alleged to be a misogynist who blocked a reporter after she wrote a critical piece on it. Post.news sounds intriguing. Mastodon? Not so much.

i cannot judge anyone for what they do regarding twitter: i'm still on fb. i have reasons, but we all know there are many good reasons to abandon that platform as well.
i googled my twitter name today and got the "this account does not exist" response and am good with that.

(1,127 posts)This is a link to the Mastodon post shown below. If you follow it, you see responses on Mastodon and also browse the Memorial's feed there - I daresay it's as good as, if not better than twitter. DU should replace twitter linking here with an easier ability to link to Mastodon instead.

(2,739 posts)They have right wing share holders and board members pushing for certain approaches. Not to mention the many advertisers who are conservative in the older sense of that word.
Plus, in Zuckerberg's case, he holds to a libertarian philosophy which gives him a great excuse for doing little to nothing.
But control? No, I agree it's influence rather than control.

"I'll die first!"
Oh good. I was worried this was all getting hilariously out of proportion.
I'm beginning to wonder at what point intervention is necessary. What would that look like? "Mom, Dad. Get the family. Billy will not pull himself away from Twitter all day. I already phoned the pastor."
Like, what outside force would be necessary to get that grip?
"I'll die first!"
Yes. This is what a well-adjusted person who is not addicted to their computer monitor would say about social media. It is absolutely within the bounds of normal emotional regulation.
I think we need some of these people constantly quoted to start admitting they might have a problem. At what point are the rest of us enabling by validating it?
