(15,501 posts)Governor Whitmer is one of the country's best governors, if not THE best governor.

(18,745 posts)Whitmer is a big reason Michigan saw a blue sweep of the state.
And I do mean a sweep. Dems swept all the state wide races, held the Michigan Supreme Court, flipped the House, flipped the Senate, Won every seat on the state school board, won every open seat on the board for MSU, U of M, and Wayne State, and Sent 7 Dems to Washington as part of our 13 person House delegation. Both Senators from my state are Democrats.
And 3 ballot proposals championed by Democrats all won in landslides while enshrining abortion rights into the Constitution, making it easier to vote, and promoting financial transparency for political candidates.
Michigan is the way. Since 20116 Dems here have had it totally together and turned Michigan from a Trump state, to fully blue.

(18,745 posts)And it got on the ballot because the new Michigan Supreme Court Chief Justice voted against her own party back then to allow the ballot measure to remain on the ballot.
Justice Elizabeth Clement was appointed by Republican Governor Rick Snyder, but has acted independently. In 2018 she faced immense pressure to, without any legal basis, keep the ballot proposal off the ballot. Instead of caving to Cons, she followed the law and the voters of Michigan decided against gerrymandered districts. She was unanimously chosen as Chief Justice this week. There are still a few good Republicans out there in the courts.
Getting good ballot proposals in front of the voters is the key. Out of phase redistricting needs to happen in Wisconsin, Ohio, and Florida. Dems in those states need to move heaven and earth to get redistricting in front of the voters, it fixes so much.

(18,745 posts)Vacancies are always filled by the sitting governor. Then they have to defend their seat in the next election.
There was a pick 2 vote among 5 candidates in the Michigan Supreme Court race this Fall. Dem Richard Bernstein got 33.4% of the vote. Rep Brian Zahra got 24.3%. Bolden 21.4%. No one else got 13%. So it would have just been a pick 3 and Bolden would have won anyway. But in Michigan, the vacancies are always filled by the governor, but picking the candidate with the next amount of votes, Whitmer is taking into account what the voters decided.

(18,745 posts)No sane governor is going to risk a seat on the state Supreme Court. Especially with abortion rights still hanging in the balance. McCormack chose when she retired, not the governor. She was still seated after the election.
