and he called her "brilliant." What a crock.
But it's really up to the Bureau of Prisons. Hope they don't go along with this.

Judge proposes Theranos CEO Elizabeth Holmes serve her 11-year sentence in a 'minimum-security' Texas prison camp

District Judge Edward Davila recommended for Holmes to be designated to the Federal Prison Camp at Bryan, Texas, according to a November 21 filing. The Federal Prison Camp in Bryan is a minimum-security prison that houses female inmates.
The Federal Bureau of Prisons describes prison camps as "work- and program-oriented," and inmates are housed in dormitories. These prisons also have limited or no perimeter fencing. There are at least seven such prison camps in the US, the bureau's website shows.
Criminal defense lawyer Alan Ellis told Bloomberg that prison staff at the camp are more "open-minded," and that Holmes' lawyers had likely requested the location.
"No one wants to get kicked out because compared to other places in the prison system, this place is heaven. If you have to go it's a good place to go," Ellis said. While Davila has recommended these provisions for Holmes' incarceration, the final decision is slated to be made by the US Bureau of Prisons. Holmes has been ordered to surrender herself into custody by April 27, 2023.

(32,087 posts)She is free until the end of April. I'm betting she finds a way to sneak out. She may or may not be "brilliant." But, she is definitely a criminal. Here's hoping she actually sees hard time.

Her main talent appears to be charming powerful white men and I'm guessing that the judge is one of them.

(1,233 posts)The focus should be on why more of the people who find themselves in the correctional system arent sentenced to places like this.
Why should anyone be subjected to inhumane conditions? Even the most dangerous criminals should be housed and cared for in a safe and humane manner.
Honestly, if she doesnt pose an actual threat to society, why lock her up at all? Pop an ankle monitor on her, help her find employment appropriate for her skill set, and redirect all of her earnings except for a stipend to meet her necessities to restitution.
Step one to addressing our prison problems is to lock up the people we are afraid of instead of the ones were just mad at.

(33,397 posts)Sure, the other goals are nice (Rehabilitation, Deterrence, Incapacitation), but what's essential is that convicted people are made to suffer punishment, be it spartan living quarters, or extrajudicial assault, or even prison rape (for men, never for women).
Holmes will probably get sent to Bryan, and she'll probably get out in 3-5 years. Then we'll all have to suffer through her redemption story.

(63,221 posts)Do they, in the aggregate, represent the most frequently abused and over-jailed demographic? I suspect not, and as such they should be afforded no priority in assigning these cushy "sorry to inconvenience you" sentences.
I'm all for rehabilitation and for lessening the brutal for-profit model of punishment that's been guiding American prisons for well over a century. It just seems silly and, in fact, part of of the problem to coddle wealthy white criminals first, whether they're bilking investors out of billions or raping unconscious women behind dumpsters.
Until these gentle sentences apply equally to all offenders, then it is impossible to look at a case like this honestly without seeing it as obvious preferential treatment, especially when the judge goes out of their way to kiss the criminal's ass during sentencing.

(94,721 posts)Prison assignments arent based on white collar vs blue collar crimes. Theyre based on likely behavior, propensity for violence, and need for and availability of services.
