(8,971 posts)And conservative once pointed to caution and not radicalism. There was a time when the two terms were not mutually exclusive in terms of what comprised a functional political system. As for Brazil, the use of "liberal" as a misappropriation of reality would not be the first time demagogues labeled their political party or movement as something that it is not. Hitler's Nazi party incorporated "Socialist", and even today many totalitarian governments operate under the banner of "Democratic" or "Republic". False labeling as a means of generating or maintaining popular support, or for outright propaganda purposes is nothing new.
