I thought we did well in gerrymandering?

I distinctly recall progressive election experts making celebratory tweets about how we had actually helped ourselves with gerrymandering this election cycle, or at worst broken even.

Is that not the case? Did we fall behind at the end?

Should have done better but courts allowed acknowledged illegal maps to be used for the election.
How TF that can be remedied I sure dunno.

2. Some of the decisions that were favorable to us, notably in New York, were reversed.

We DID do well in NY. Then a R state judiciary reversed the map.

5. It was the right decision, and those who dissented ignored the law

In 2014 NYers voted to ban gerrymandering. In 2021, we got greedy and wrote up a heavily gerrymandered map that overtly favored us so much that even SI would be guaranteed a Democrat. The judges were 100% spot on.

7. I suppose you are right-- but it seems that 'court decisions' only work in states

where the state government respects the law! (meaning Democratic states....)

Now, in Ohio, the courts ALSO ruled against the unconstitutional Republican gerrymander of congressional seats,
YET those maps were used for this election anyway!!! How does that work ?

In hindsight, I would judge the "unilateral disarmament" by Democrats, of disallowing gerrymandering in the 2 big states which we control, New York and California, to have been a mistake--- in light of what Republicans do in the rest of the country...

I would submit that I object to your choice of words re: New York "we got greedy"--
what New York Democrats tried to do was not for "greed", but to attempt to save the country from the Republican gerrymandering in places like Florida! In that light, I find the NY court ruling unfortunate, even though it might be deemed legally 'correct', in a vacuum..

9. No, it was greed that stemmed back to Cuomo

We could have submitted a map that was sorta like the status quo 10 years ago. That would have been fine and not struck down.

Instead we submitted something that would have given us a 3-5 seat advantage over the old map. When that was rightfully struck down and a very fair map was given to NY, which gave the Republicans a few more seats than the old one. It still gives Democrats the majority. In NY.

You're right about other states. The solution should be a nationwide law banning gerrymandering.

8. OK, to be more precise, a state judiciary that acts like Rs.

Conservatives also control the highest state court in New York, which is another state that produced significant Republican gains in the House. For that, we have to thank former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo. As governor, Cuomo appointed two “former” Republicans and two conservative “Democrats” to the state court of appeals (the highest court in New York). Those four tend to vote as a bloc.

11. We did extremely well despite the gerrymander but of course the gerrymander hurts us

And New York and California should step up and gerrymander those large Democratic states. It would help a great deal.
