For centuries it was a scourge on the sexually active and their partners, incurable, causing a variety of symptoms including madness in some, stillbirth and idiocy in newborns, and on and on. A diagnosis meant social ruin, and the end of marriage plans forever if you were honorable.

When Shakespeare wrote: “A pox on both your houses,” it was one helluva curse.

Penicillin — truly a miracle drug.
