There is no bottom to the degree to which hes willing to degrade himself, and the country for that matter. Having dinner with those people was disgusting
I voted to remove him from office twice
I dont think he should be president of the United states. I dont think he should be the nominee of our party in 2024. And I certainly dont want him hanging over our party like a gargoyle.
Sen. Mitt Romney (R-UT), quoted by NBC News, on Donald Trump having dinner with Holocaust deniers.

(33,643 posts)Marriage, and one could observe he voted for it. And voted yes on both impeachments.
For a Republican, Mitt's about the most scrupulous in the current crop I'd say.
He doesn't meet the standards of even an average Dem, but for a PuQ, he's relatively solid.

We all need to remember "corporations are people my friends" I find it difficult to let that one go. in addition the corporate raiderness of Bain capital with many loosing much due to his actions.
In this, the enemy of my enemy is my friend is about right. Although looking at the opposition party as enemies is not perfect.

(11,317 posts)the word was - 'will no one in the party stand up and rebuke Trump for this odious meeting with openly racist anti-Semites?'
Well, Mitt Romney has now done so in about the clearest and most straightforward possible terms. (and he's not alone in having done so either). And now the message is, 'well, it doesn't matter because - past crimes, Republican, and they're all swamp creatures.'
Well, this is me saying it does matter, folks. This is what it looks like when you have a country (or some portions of it) that is striving for standards and decency - and perhaps democracy itself. Credit where credit is due. We should be capable of that.

I still think he pushed his ex down the stairs or had someone do it. He doesn't deserve to be compared to someone who only LOOKED like a monster.
King of beggars is from the movie and in both versions, Quasimodo is defending someone he loves from being taken from Sanctuary space/status that keeps her from being hanged for a crime she did not commit.
http://www.lonchaney.org/filmography/136.html
Actual story has "a group of vagabonds" attacking the Cathedral.... though their attempt is to "save" Esmeralda, Quasimodo doesn't know that. He thinks only having her in sanctuary keeps her safe from execution.

(13,043 posts)had said and done. By that time he'd shown who he was yet Romney sucked up his pride and cowtowed to the most ignominious, vile & corrupt thug there ever was running for the nation's office. He knew damn well what he was getting himself into and we know why - Romney is as much an opportunist as the Con is, and he STOOPED to the Con's level by kissing his ring. Spineless & shameful.

Just like Pence was looking for any way possible to not certify the election and kiss Trumps feet.
In the end both men just couldn't find a path to do that.
Mittens is just a little smarter than Pence in that he saw that there was no use in not making a clean break soon, while it seems like Pence for too long was still trying to find a way to get another pat on the head from his Orange master.
But Romney will also eagerly campaign for, and vote for, DeSantis. Who is the same beast, but is not lacking the political self preservation awareness to keep his mouth shut when it needs to be.

Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)Is that okay?
And if so ... why is that different from 'religious bigotry', inherently?
Is it because the widespread religions are, like, older, and they have 'holy books', and their adherents collectively own property/churches, and they have priests and rabbis and mullahs and shit like that? These sorts of things gives them imprimatur, and we just have to 'respect' them?
What if 'Q' becomes an 'official' religion, builds churches, appoints clergy, etc? Would that make it 'off-limits' for our criticism, which then becomes religious 'bigotry'?
For that matter, can we make fun of Moonies and Scientologists, and if so, why?
Hypothetical questions
Just A Box Of Rain
(5,104 posts)Not the moral high road, methinks.
Hugh_Lebowski
(33,643 posts)When I think of bigotry I think of being hateful towards others because of things they can't control like race or skin color.
Religion is a choice, and it's just 'beliefs', which are actually entirely arbitrary and based in almost no sense in 'reality'.
Ergo, I see absolutely no difference in making fun of people for believing in magic underwear or holy water or thetans ... than I do in making fun of people who think cabals of pedophiles drink the blood of infants for their adrenochrome.
So no, I'm not making excuses ... I simply outright reject the premise that it's properly called 'bigotry'.
But then, I grant 'religious beliefs' damn near zero imprimatur ... universally.

that traitor will never see his actions as degrading, not for himself, not for r's, not for country, not for the world.
traitor is absent of self-reflection, a souless meat sack who is a metaphor of all human weaknesses.

(16,975 posts)traitor will never see that a dinner with monsters degrades himself, or the r's, or the country. traitor doesn't tick like romney or other humans on the normal spectrum. If romney or any other r wants to be rid of traitor, they need to stress that it isn't because having dinner with antisemites is wrong, it is because traitor lacks human traits that make him understand it is wrong and why. Think of Hannibal Lector without the urge to eat his victims.

(1,292 posts)Trump would have been removed from office and the country would be a much saner place. He was my Governor in Mass. (hemmed in by an 85% Democratic state legislature) and did a decent job and gave us the country's only fully fledged version of what the Affordable Care Act should be.
I didn't vote for him for President, but if the Republican party was capable of choosing more Rockefeller type Republicans like Romney and Charlie Baker and William Weld, the discourse in America would be 10,000 times less toxic. That said, you're an asshole if you drive on the highway with your dog strapped to the roof.

(11,317 posts)And, yes - more Rs like Romney (McCain and others) - and this country would not be in near the ditch it is right now. There is a difference.

(111,276 posts)It's just a measure of how batshit crazy that party has become.
I really think they'll get their civil war, but it will be in their own party. You can't fire people up with years of televangelism plus the fake tea party movement topped off by the idiotic but seductive Q nonsense and not expect violence. The big money boys made too many deals with too many devils to avoid it.
I suppose the Libertarians will pick up a lot of their voters. Those voters will turn that party into what the Republicans were before Nixon sold them to the bigots and crime bosses: decent enough but wrong.
The wackadoodles will form a series of splinter parties. They always have.
