Desiree Jefferson knows the start of the school year often means her nurse’s office will be a revolving door for sick students.

But this year, the number of kids treated by Ms. Jefferson, a McKeesport Area High School nurse, has increased as flu and upper respiratory viruses spread at an unprecedented rate, threatening to push school nurses to the brink and leaving working parents to decide if they should keep their children home.

“It’s almost like a trifecta because you have to deal with RSV, COVID and the flu,” said Ms. Jefferson. “We’re not even sure exactly where our students fit in but when you have all three of those things going on it does drain a lot on our health system
