US defeats Iran 1-0 to advance to the knockout rounds.
Both teams appeared to be completely exhausted when time expired.
I'm not a soccer fan, but I can appreciate great athletes giving their all.

(182,826 posts)8 in the first half (Publisic was down for a while) and 9 in the second?
Pretty common for this world cup that the added time has been quite high.
I havent seen THAT MUCH time added on but Ive only caught a few matches.

(11,631 posts)That refs were given the directive in meetings before the tournament to err on the high side and in the matches I have seen it has been the case.

(11,631 posts)Hilarious to read some of the folks in this thread who never watch soccer seeing 1-0 and not appreciating the level of sheer suspense!

I always thinnk the people who complain that the scores in soccer are so low are full of it. Have there never been American football games where the winning team has only scored 1-2 touchdowns? A quick Google search shows there have been plenty, and some where only 2 or 3 points were scored -
https://www.playusa.com/football-lowest-scoring-games -
Since the dawn of NFL football, there have been an incredible 73 games that ended in a 0-0 tie. There have also been five 2-0 games in NFL history where just a safety was scored.
The lowest-scoring game in this millennium ended 3-0. It is one of 59 such games in NFL history, but going in, oddsmakers had no idea that so few points would be put on the board. They set the over/under at 38.5.
The massive under came in, just as it did for all the games on the following list of the top 10 lowest scoring NFL games in this millennium.

(11,631 posts)The action is nonstop unlike the 3 major sports in America which continuously stop and start. Football and baseball seem like they are not playing in any given game much more than they are playing. AND, the fact that a team can dominate a game and still only lead by a goal or so means that upsets are more likely. Sometimes it only takes a mistake or two to wreck an otherwise dominating performance. There have been some stunners in this tournament already. And how many football games in which one team dominates the way USA did today in the first half come down to the final minutes with that much suspense? Not a lot.

(24,006 posts)...basketball. Back when we only had one television, if there was a game he wanted to watch, the TV was his. I remember several occasions when I would ask how much time was left in a football game, and he'd say, "5 minutes." I'd come back 15-20 minutes later, and there would still be 3 minutes left!
Our older son loves sports statistics and once told me that in an average NFL broadcast, the football is only in play for about 12 minutes.

(101,321 posts)14 minutes in the 1st half (injury to Iranian goalkeeper, but he wanted to carry on, then had to stop again a few minutes later, and was taken off) and 10 in the 2nd.
Officials have been told to have no tolerance for time-wasting, which is adding on more than in the past.

(23,926 posts)Although, to be honest, I'm not a big fan, so it might not be as unusual as I might assume.
I only tend to watch during the World Cup and the Olympics.

(182,826 posts)The post above says theyve been adding a lot of time but 17 minutes is a lot. 19% of a game.

(23,926 posts)but the referee appeared to be considering awarding Iran a PK in the final minute of extra time.
Talk about WORRIED!

(11,631 posts)And it was not close IMO he went down in the box with almost no contact and the defender pulling his hands away.

(23,926 posts)And yes, disastrous! A PK would have almost certainly sent us home.
mcar
(42,334 posts)awarding him a PK would have been a travesty.
That was stressful. The ref did a good job, though.

Both teams played well and intensely, but I can't help but have sympathy for the Iranian team--especially given their attempt to support those fighting back against persecution in their own country.

(13,592 posts)if it was World Cup or the Olympics. You know how people thing soccer is low scoring? This was a barn burner. I think it was a 5-4 USA win. Goals left and right. I'm a hockey fan so I appreciate low scoring games too, but that was fun to watch.

Now I turn my attention to my adopted home south of the border. El Tri needs a win and some help to advance tomorrow.

My favorite goal margin is to be up by 3. 1 is never enough. 2 is OK but can still be overcome if there is enough/too much time on the clock. More than 3 and my maternal heart starts to feel sorry for the opposing team.
