It would be difficult to enforce a law to refuse power to sociopaths and narcissists because of who they are and the destruction they cause outright.
So could we begin this change by making it automatically a disqualification to run for any office or position in our government or state governments if you have a felony conviction/record. That would disqualify a lot of republicans who are sociopaths and narcissists right there.Just like you have to show taxes you have to show arrest records and lying about it,hiding it is a felony .
If we have control of both houses maybe it should be made a new law and codified. From state boards to president.
Sure would keep the criminality down in our government.
Might actually make it better and more humane.

(12,480 posts)To the adults running for office they are who the real dangers are. I dont think myself I would trust a felon to be safe around that kind of power.
I know some felons do see the error of the past .
A lot of republicans have felony records.
Sex crime records. A surprisingly big amount of republicans are criminals.
But I think getting dangerous people out of government is what it is important at this time.

(9,815 posts)You know, it's probably the easiest thing in the world to run a sting operation.
HOWEVER, it may be that the only people allowed to impersonate minors are law enforcement officials.
I *DEFINITELY* want those January 6 "legislators" who plotted and coordinated the coup attempt charged.
Look, the FBI knows who was where.

Seditious Conspiracy cannot go ignored. Maybe Rhodes is the first domino to fall.
They've got to be held accountable.
Whole wheat that gives shy persons the strength to get up and invade the Capitol Building. Heavens, they're tasty, and so seditious!

(115,735 posts)Lots of really terrible people are never convicted of crimes, either because they are so wealthy and powerful that they are left alone, or are too clever to get caught - or maybe they don't commit crimes at all, and get what they want while operating entirely within the system. And some people who have committed crimes are not sociopaths at all, just people who got tangled up with drugs or alcohol. It's not a useful way of screening the bad people out of politics.

(11,738 posts)I understand the sentiment of not wanting people who have such significant character deficits like Trump, to be around the levers of power, but as you said, the method described in the OP would likely not get true psychopaths away from power and would likely net many people who have just made some poor decisions, been at the wrong place at the wrong time, or who are simply people of color or marginalized groups who are routinely targeted by the justice system.
I would suggest that ( and this is also "pie in the sky" getting money out of political campaigns might help weed some people out. Have elections be a very systematic and formatted process. A certain number of policy speeches. A certain number of town halls with a cross section of voters in the audience. Debates (Real debates where the moderators can redirect and make people answer the question of get muted).
No billion or hundred million, or tens of millions of dollars spent on ads the lie and distort information. No dark money.
