Just heard an interview with a rail worker union official.

I am now absolutely behind the union. FOUR F***ING SICK DAYS!!!!! The have NONE now. They worked during the pandemic and got sick and got no pay. As this guy said, why is the pressure on the union and not on the company that refuses to grant FOUR F***ING SICK DAYS. They have NONE now!!!!!

I hope they include the requirement of paid sick time.. They could also extend the existing cooling-off period so both sides have more time to negotiate. Or they could turn the talks over to independent arbitrators who would be tasked with finding a resolution.

Knowing that they have to get at least 10 Rethugs to support this will make anything good very hard to do.

It will be interesting what happens in the negotiation - the GOP more than likely would like nothing more that the Dems pissing off the labor leaders so I don't expect them to do anything positive except blame the Democrats.

Has anyone actually heard any of the proposals?

Just two weeks vacation and that is it. He's looking for another job because he is tired of it.

Not much Union anything in these parts unfortunately.

Edit to add: he does make fairly good money for where we live, and we moved away from a previous job in a different state. He just gets tired of using vacation days for sick time or doctors appointments. If he doesn't work he doesn't get paid, and right now he can't afford that.

I'm working as a Physical Therapist. I have more education and work harder than I ever have on any job.
I'm treated with the same value as a fast-food worker.
I mentioned that last time I got my hair cut and the stylist said everyone is saying the same thing.

They should walk out en masse on Christmas eve and stay out until the day after New Years Day and then sue for lost wages for all the holidays that they never had. I know that's unlikely but something's gotta give. How they've persisted is incomprehensible.

The company can't just pull people off the street or out of fast food joints to do those jobs.

7 days is pretty minimal, it's not an outrageous request. The company is just being pigheaded and foolish.

I know they got burned by things like featherbedding back in the bad old days, but those days are largely gone. 7 days leave will only get somebody past the worst of a bad flu and this year the flu is really bad.
