President Biden
@POTUS
United States government official
I just want to make a few things clear:
The Holocaust happened.
Hitler was a demonic figure.
And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides.
Silence is complicity.

(4,297 posts)I was a traveling public-school speech/language pathologist, and we lived in Grand Tower, Illinois. A resident and former teacher tried to school us on how Hitler and the Nazis had supposedly been slandered and had been "not really so bad." I had grown up in a mostly-Jewish Chicago neighborhood, and I gasped and nearly said some very bad words. My husband, who had been a US soldier stationed in Germany about ten years earlier, luckily spoke first: "It was a crime against humanity." The man said "Bah!" and walked out before I could say anything.
I do want to say that not all of the Grand Tower inhabitants were like that. I was helping the volunteer ambulance crew in my spare time. These ambulance volunteers were all very shaken and sympathetic to the plight of Black people in Southern Illinois, as some of them described the terror expressed by a Black family injured the night before in an accident nearby, when they saw white ambulance crew people approaching them. These ambulance crew members were not antisemitic, either.

(17,342 posts)that the President of the United States had to call it out. Jimmy Carter or Gerald Ford having to make a speech about anti-semitism? Unthinkable.

(115,674 posts)Some would have voted GOP in the past for the same reasons members of other minority groups might have done - small government ideology, taxes, a perception (not all that accurate) that the GOP was better for business, generally conservative mindset, etc. - but until TFG became president the GOP managed to keep its anti-Semitism and general bigotry under wraps well enough to attract the votes of at least some of the people they secretly disparaged. But it's all out in the open now, and the fact that so many Congresscritters and other high-visibility GOPers have failed to vigorously denounce the likes of Ye and Fuentes and the fact that the current leader of the GOP is dining with such vermin and brushes off the controversy by claiming disingenuously that he didn't know who Fuentes was, should be clear evidence that there are no policy issues that should weigh more than the fact that the GOP now tolerates actual Nazis. Not just Nazi-sympathetic or Nazi-adjacent people, but real, admitted Nazis who openly hate and want to eliminate Jews. It couldn't be much worse if zombie Hitler turned up for dinner at Mierda-Loco and was welcomed with open arms.

I'm only half joking about that. I wouldn't put anything past Eloon at this point.

It will be interesting to see where Dem leaders and Activists Go to speak out if they leave Twitter for whatever reason.

(19,193 posts)Especially since Eloon fired everyone who's supposed to monitor the platform. It's on an "honor system" now I guess, with some of the most dishonorable people in the world being reinstated. Yeah, that'll work.

(32,633 posts)Remember those weird handshakes? He was always trying to wrestle Macron with his handshakes. Macron is sort of short, and Chump always used his height to make himself look "manlier" towering over Macron. I think he insulted him him once by cutting him off while Macron was talking, but I forget the circumstances.
Once Chump pushed the President of Montenegro out of the way to get to the front of a photo shoot. (that video has been shown endlessly) All the European leaders hated Chump for one reason or another. Joe Biden is a dream compared to Chump.

(16,370 posts)I absolutely believe the way he hangs on to people way past the point where anyone else would have disengaged is all about power and dominance.
I'll never forget the one with Shinzo Abe. That really made me cringe, especially Abe's facial expression and body language at the end. He did a great job of concealing his discomfort while it was going on, but once Trump let go of him and turned away, he sagged back in the chair with a look of "OMG, what the hell was THAT?" on his face.

Of course, when it's a woman, like Mme Macron, it's even more cringeworthy. 😬

Honorable mention to Hillary Clinton. For her powerful intellect and towering leadership in her own right. Made her mightily attractive in my eyes, at least.

(6,254 posts)At War so the horrors of the Holocaust and Hitler were not far removed from our conscience. I wonder if most people under 30 can even identify who was fighting who in WWII. Off topic, but family legend says my father's first cousin was with Patton during the war. My father always thought it was an exaggeration but his cousin who was the first host of Entertainment Tonight type show traces his father's movement during WWII and found a picture of his father standing next to Patton with a rifle with a google search. It's part of the Getty collection. So the legend was true. Just thought that was interesting.

"I just want to make a few things clear: The Holocaust happened. Hitler was a demonic figure. And instead of giving it a platform, our political leaders should be calling out and rejecting antisemitism wherever it hides. Silence is complicity," the president wrote on Twitter.
His comments follow a widely criticized interview Thursday between conspiracy theorist Alex Jones and the rapper Ye, formerly known as Kanye West. Ye praised Hitler, expressed his admiration for Nazis, made antisemitic jokes and talked about his recent dinner at Mar-a-Lago with former President Donald Trump, which was also attended by Nick Fuentes, a far-right figure who has espoused white nationalist views.

(1,654 posts)Growing up and going to school in the 1950s we, of course, knew about WWII. They were still making a lot of war movies then. We were taught about the depression - our parents certainly lived through it and remembered it. We knew there were Nazi extermination camps but not that much about the horrors of them, and certainly not our role in supplying German companies with products, and not our role in not accepting Jewish refugees when they needed refuge. I was a volunteer student librarian in our small high school library and had access to the glassed off stacks at the back of our library where the books were kept which were considered only for advanced history students, except that so many of them were fairly recent, not more than a decade or two old. I was so surprised at the reading material there. I never knew about the German American Bund. I was shocked to find out that Lindberg, the hero who flew the Atlantic solo (Spirit of St. Louis was made in the 50s), was a Nazi sympathizer. I learned about Father Coughlin.
When Judgment at Neurenberg came out and they showed actual footage from the camps so many Americans were absolutely shocked. I think when the war ended and they didn't see the pictures of the horror they just thought of them as concentration camps, not killing camps. That's when the word Holocaust really entered the English language.
Over the years I thought about the books in that room. I loved history but knew something was wrong in the way they disappeared all that information, pretended it didn't happen. It taught me that we never learn the complete history and will never be as great as we hoped we would be if we keep hiding the truth and do not talk about our failings and face them. It's not just the Confederate states that won't face their past. We all do it. Now we have the rise of the moms that don't want their kids to be taught anything that may make their darlings even feel uncomfortable. I guess this is how we disappeared the mid-30s through the early 40s. I just never thought that Americans would deny it ever happened, or wasn't as bad as reported, or even worse, that Hitler didn't exterminate enough.
