Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene (R-GA) will essentially act as Speaker of the House if Kevin McCarthy gets the job, according to former Republican National Committee chairman Michael Steele.
Donald Trump still controls the party and is likely to win the GOP nomination for president in 2024, but Steele told MSNBC's "Morning Joe" the party was fully in the thrall of an increasingly extreme base personified by Greene, was just re-elected to her second term in Congress.
"The media and others still want to focus on the man and, you know, what he's trying to do, what he's trying to say -- we're past that," Steele said. "I'm now looking at where the party leadership is trying to move itself, and the more telling thing for me was not the dinner that Donald Trump had with [Nick] Fuentes and Kanye [West]. It was the lack of response from political wannabes, who want to be president, the governor of Florida, which i still don't think he's put a statement out on that. The leadership of the party, 'Oh, we don't like antisemitism,' without saying that the anti-Semitic former president is the case to be made against, and to draw that very bright line and say this is not who we are, nor is it who we want to be."
Steele hasn't heard that and doesn't expect to, because party leadership fears the base.

OAITW r.2.0
(23,862 posts)McCarthy has one card to play, if he wants to be Speaker....cut a deal with the Democrats. That deal would be twofold.
(1) No blacklisting Democrats on committee assignments
(2) No Republican fishing expeditions on Biden
How bad do you want it Kevin?

(15,020 posts)A better (but still very unlikely) deal would be a coalition of all Democrats, plus a handful of Republicans from swing districts finally ready to get off the Trump Train, to get behind a conservative Democrat (sorry Jeffries) or the least batshit crazy Republican they can find, as the new Speaker.
That would be a very disappointing coalition for Democrats, but it would at least be a coalition that scuttled the bullshit investigations and impeachments, and one that did the minimum to keep the government running without shutdowns and debt ceiling crises for the next two years.

(48,789 posts)At least two Democrats, including the one who wears red coats and sunglasses leaving the White House after laying down the law, have much greater claim than Empty every would or could.
Two that I can think of off the top of my head.

(5,491 posts)And a seemingly fractured caucus. I don't think the moderates want lumped with the crazies. Sadly I don't see much getting done the next 2 years.

If we can contain and prevent the damage they seem hellbent on doing, itll wind up being a net gain.

(2,234 posts)..which is still not a given. Personally, Im thinking the Trump effect is weakening and not sure the Freedom caucus can take control of the entire house GOP caucus.
But MTG is already ruling McCarthy, so what else is new

(2,077 posts)We are all kidding ourselves if we think TFG isnt in control of the crazies who control the party. His cult of 40% of the party will own the primaries and will probably lose the general elections.

She's reportedly already used that to do that.
I'm fine with them being more obviously RW extremist and seditious than McCarthy and company want to appear. The uglier and more shocking and repellent while they lack the power to do more harm than any current Republican majority would, the better. We NEED Republican voters to kick the MAGA nihilists out in 2024.
That time's now. We can stop the MAGAs with the senate and presidency, AND we have a large enough minority in the house to cause them real trouble when needed.
They must be incredibly deluded by success with Fox and company to imagine they can pin all their own crimes on us and the media won't be showing video of them urging people to spread killer disease and running out of banks with stolen loot.
