Russia has had their fingers in so many church branches the US OCA variant had to formally declare itself independent a few decades ago, and even then they still exert a lot of cultural pressure through them. I don’t doubt the Ukrainian branch has even more to deal with given the proximity and resentment Russia has had to Kiev’s independence and primacy in the region.

Oh and yeah… plenty of assets tied up in their real estate and art holdings etc
