General Discussion
Related: Editorials & Other Articles, Issue Forums, Alliance Forums, Region ForumsI have no idea where this will go, but I propose that we at DU poll ourselves to see how
many would be in favor of treating Twitter the same way we treat what we euphemistically call "that site which shall not be named".
I would vote "yes"---in favor of so treating Twitter.
Do we really need to feed this beast?

(2,095 posts)and they let me in. Keep an eye on your email (and maybe your spam folder) for the link to get in. There are tons of new people arriving every single day. Prepare a dog photo, it seems to be the traditional first post.
Also, I don't think they're going in order, although I don't know, because I was somewhere in the neighborhood of 189,700th in line and I got my email two days later. And I'm pretty sure that there's not 190,000 users yet. I could be wrong, there's 100's of thousands of people on DU and it feels very cozy, so what do I know about usage numbers?
Post is nice. I'm liking it so far. It does still have some glitches, but not as many as you'd expect considering they're building it on the fly.

(6,229 posts)I don't allow twitter to run script so all I see is the annoying 'link to tweet'
I will probably start blocking the tweet spammers.

(4,461 posts)there remain quite a few active posters who have intelligent, important and relevant things to say, and it remains still an invaluable and unparalleled source of news and information. We shouldnt exclude it here. You should, however, ask this question again a year from now. My view might well change.

(50,949 posts)links. When I do it seems to be all Kanye and other idiocies. There's very seldom anything that's actually interesting.
There's NEVER any news at the links that I need to know and didn't already know.
There are many, though, who are deeply invested in Twitter and will howl, inwardly or outwardly, at your suggestion.

(17,530 posts)It should be a personal choice. That said, I don't know why any progressive person would want to support the site by as much as giving them an extra click. If Musk wants to make it into a Nazi swamp, so be it, but I don't want to be even the tiniest part of it.
There was life before Twitter.

(27,556 posts)Same concept... people need to stop using and get off the platform as it is currently run.
If anything, Musk and the mess he is creating is way worse than even those companies...!
I am already boycotting any threads on DU, or anywhere else, that use Twitter for sourcing.
DU was way to Twitter driven for sourcing even before this...

(4,170 posts)I can think of at least two posters who seem to only cross post from that cesspool; it's all they post.
One seems to have a massive crush on the Musk man.
I just do not get that, but to each his own.

(53,061 posts)The context of my answer was a completely reasonable suggestion to a unique new media phenomenon that is not really intended to engage in discussion and is not consistent with General Discussion.
Rather the posting of memes is largely to parade clever or not so clever sharp rejoiners that stand by themselves and either engender respect or disdain. Some posters like RandySF are carefully selected almost curated.
However many others are vacuous and trite just like your accusation that I had an interest in censorship which has nothing to do with the very sensible proposal I have made.
Many posters post their favorite tweet with a simple one word "This", unlike discussion threads which convey a basic idea of the premise of the discussion subject in their title so if you have been quite fed up reading about, say, the idiots standing in front of the Maricopa Election Center you can pass by it.
Many people posting, if not most, are found of titles that are purposely vague like "Bob Jones FTW", or the ubiquitous "This". Personally I find that discourteous in the same way that you have purposely misinterpreted my very clear language into something that a 12 year old could understand.
I am a 68 year old diabetic that works 10-12 hours a day and would like to spend the sparse time I have on DU in as efficient matter as possible. To that end it makes sense to me to move all of the social media meme posts that are for "show and go" to it's own specialized forum where I could simply click on the most rec'd and responded to threads and avoid the mass of pedestrian posts that have posted someone else's very clever take on something with the obscure "Bill Jones FTW" or "This".
That you would double down on the spurious and untruthful invective that I in any way was sympathetic to censoring subject matter reveals more about your lack of care in reading somebody's comments and your complete lack of integrity in dealing with the intent of the person you are responding to. I resent the implication and you should be ashamed of it.
Moving all the social media into it's own forum, like LBN, Videos and Multi Media, and Editorials and Articles would enhance people's DU experience for the same reason that those three forums segregate like media. It will never tried for the very reason you responded the way you did: emotionally charges adolescent rants that miss the point of what is being said but should it be tried for a month I think everyone would find it's establishment useful and enjoyable and not want it to be changed back.

(6,390 posts)I don't use it, though I do have an account...just get email's occasionally from twitter with scantily clad young women, occasionally I click on it, then see the "subscribe to Only Fans". I have a good laugh and delete it. I'm actually only follow various national parks.
If you don't like it and want to delete your account, by all means, feel free to do so. But not everyone is going to do so just because you don't like Elon Musk and his behavior. His attitude is exhibited by a lot of CEO's and I don't see much activism against them. He just happens to be in the spotlight more, so he gets all the attention.
The real question, from what I've read in some financial circles, what if he's right? That being his staffing cuts, some are watching with much interest. Its long been thought the tech industry as being bloated with too many employee's and excessive benefits. Jobs that are set to support other jobs and they have them because "you don't want to lose great talent to Facebook, Google, etc."
And the benefits, the only reason you need to go to your over priced studio in Silicon Valley is to sleep...maybe. All your meals, gym, and entertainment is provided at the company, free of charge. Just so they can keep you there longer to work more hours. Despite study after study saying workers who have a less than 40 hour week produce more.
I'm looking at his as an experiment, not a political issue.
