I heard her say something to the woman ahead of me about China buying one of our big companies. So as I was checking out, I asked her about it. She said they bought Hellman's - - and she could (should) have stopped there but she started to ramble so I let her.
And as accurately as I can recall, this is what she said:
"And they're buying up a lot of farmland here too - so they can tell us what to eat. I'm retired - but you know, as soon as Biden got in I knew I had to get this job - in order to survive. That Biden... he thinks he's un-touchable. Wait till January when we take over the House. Boy, he's gonna find out some things."
I've no idea whether or not her statements about Hellman's or the farmland is accurate, but I had to bite my tongue when she said Biden thinks he's un-touchable - can you believe it? Dump's the one who's been skating free all of his life.
And I have no idea what she meant by saying China wants to tell us what to eat.

(412 posts)China buying farmland was an issue in the Missouri Senate race. Do not know the specifics of it but it was the Democrat pointing out the GOP candidate allowed it.

(23,288 posts)and their peanut-sized republican brains do the translating. It's like listening to George Bush talk about business. It sounds like he was in a room where someone was talking about business and he absorbed every other word. Then when he tries to repeat it, it comes out like gibberish. He would get so far, then stop and say "It's complicated, you wouldn't understand it."

(12,463 posts)And I would be pissed if the recipe changed ,to be made with crappy cheap ingredients like most stuff you find in China. Made as cheap as possible would suck, mayo wise.
And other mayo's taste weird. Dont get me started on miracle whip. I can only handle 1/4 miracle whip to a 3/4 ths mayo mix if I want to do spicy.miracle whip straight out of the jar..nope.

I have done this a few times.

(4,516 posts)I had a checker who when ranting about the then recent Benghazi incident, repeatedly and loudly said butt f**k and c*** with children in earshot. I was 3rd back and have no idea what set her off. People stepped out of line. Customers not on our line and other cashiers were staring at her. I had just decided to find a manager when one replaced her.
Polybius
(15,373 posts)In your case, letting a manager know was the right thing. In this poster's case, there was no profanity and the poster is the one who asked the cashier.

(15,373 posts)Besides, the poster asked her. She didn't just start talking politics.

(15,220 posts)I dont think it is appropriate for her to be talking politics while at work. You did ask her, so I guess that matters. But she should not have been having the conversation with the precious customer.
I dont want to have to listen to MAGA crap when Im trying to get groceries and get home.
Just my two cents.

(53,061 posts)I approached one of those people handing out free samples behind a movable kiosk and overheard her say to the man in front of her "Yeah I miss the good ole days too when we didn't have to worry about some crazy election result".
In the context it was clear that she was talking about Obama and this just lit me up so I said "I am really curious what year you would like to move us back to?"
1800 when we could buy and sell people?
1916 didn't have the right to vote?
1820s when we gave native Americans small pox infected blankets and killed them by the hundreds of thousands?
or maybe more recent times like 1968 when both King and Robert Kennedy were assassinated?
and so on. It was quite a rant and it was one of those few times when you hit the maximum level of outrage and eloquence. It went on for a long time and there was a small group now in a semi circle around her and every time I would ask a question they would look at her to see if that indeed was the time that she considered the good ole days.
How about 1961 when we had a weak and ineffective government and business put lead in paint and gasoline and it sharply affected small children's brains?
She was embarrassed but couldn't leave and I normally would have just wandered by but I had just heard one too many "wink and nod" racist comments that were openly shared among whites assuming that everyone agreed.
Eventually I said, "Hey I am just kidding you, I know that you simply meant anytime before we had a Black President because it just makes you angry that he has done so much better than you have but I have to tell you that you need to prepare yourself because this guy is going to get up everyday and work hard to make sure that 1099 people like you and me can get affordable health care and when he does that and he brings you a benefit that no other politician has you are going to be even more angry than you are today, isn't that something? You have a good day".
It wasn't productive. I probably wouldn't have said anything but the fact that they said it in front of me and just assumed that you could make a blatant racist comment in symbolic phrasing and everyone that wasn't black would just nod and agree just grated me.
I could have reported her to the manager but I was confident that she would never make a similar remark again. At the same time I felt glad that I had gotten it off my chest but bad that I didn't use some clever response that might have gotten her to reconsider her thinking.
