An Omaha police officer resigned during an internal investigation into his conduct after an incident at his apartment complex, according to a press release from OPD.
Officer William Klees resigned Monday which was also the day his internal investigation interview was scheduled. According to a police report, a woman in his apartment complex complained that someone was dumping trash on her car, and that she recorded one of the incidents.
The Omaha City Attorney's Office consulted with OPD to cite Klees with Criminal Mischief.
Chief Todd Schmaderer released a statement regarding the investigation:
Officer Klees has completely disrupted the peace and sense of safety for Ms. Valentine. His actions are not indicative of the values of the hard-working women and men of the Omaha Police Department. His conduct is unbecoming of an officer and warrants his removal from the OPD.
Klees' resignation was accepted by OPD, and his law enforcement certificate will be revoked.

(77 posts)Once again, being on "paid leave" means you don't go to your job and you get paid same as usual. Sleep late, fly to Hawaii, no worries. Police unions love this. Did you know?--you can get sick leave while on "paid leave" extending the vacation. And you continue to get additions to your retirement fund and your family's health insurance.
All my life I have aspired to 'paid leave' for at least 6 months.
The perps get no punishment at all. Reform advocates have urged that 'paid leave' be limited to 50% of salary/benefits, to be reimbursed if exonerated.
But not a sneaky paid vacation.

(16,291 posts)He should have been freaking fired. Canned, sacked, axed, kicked to the curb.
I'm guessing it was a mutual decision. They let him resign rather than air all the dirty laundry that would have come out and reflected badly on both him and the department. He agreed to resign for the same reason.
At least he's not a cop anymore.

(111,175 posts)considering how asshole cops protect each other, even if it's a cop with a screw loose like this guy.
It's a shame she's the one who needs to move, but even if this jerk goes to jail, his buddies on the force will know who she is and where she lives.
The world sucks for women.

(111,175 posts)but I'm afraid she needs to move NOW, before any of this has a chance to grind its way slowly through the legal system.
I don't think she can sue the cops at this point since he wasn't on duty when he did this shit.

(1,766 posts)That looks like an OPD shield on the hoodie he's wearing. If it is, that means he was carrying out a crime while representing OPD.
And cops are never off-duty. Not really.
I think she'll get not a large, but a comfortable, payout. If only to make her shut up.

(15,534 posts)What a cute term. Makes it sound like he is just a ten-year old boy pranking someone on Halloween.
He's a freakin' officer of the law. Well, maybe not any longer (we can only hope).
Folks - this is how the good ole' boy network works. Never forget that. Within law enforcement it's even much more prevalent than say, in a corporate setting.
