...
In what researchers are calling a scientific breakthrough, scientists behind a new study may have found the biological reason we get more respiratory illnesses in winter. It turns out the cold air itself damages the immune response occurring in the nose.In fact, reducing the temperature inside the nose by as little as 9 degrees Fahrenheit (5 degrees Celsius) kills nearly 50% of the billions of virus and bacteria-fighting cells in the nostrils, according to the study published Tuesday in The Journal of Allergy and Clinical Immunology.
...
Cold air is associated with increased viral infection because youve essentially lost half of your immunity just by that small drop in temperature, said rhinologist Dr. Benjamin Bleier, director of otolaryngology at Massachusetts Eye and Ear and an associate professor at Harvard Medical School in Boston.
As it turns out, the pandemic gave us exactly what we need to help fight off chilly air and keep our immunity high, Bleier said.
Not only do masks protect you from the direct inhalation of viruses, but its also like wearing a sweater on your nose, he said.

(9,143 posts)I've always thought wind chill was a factor in catching a cold. Wrong, I guess.

(51,680 posts)By making you nose cold, it suppresses the virus fighter cells in your nose, thus making it a friendly environment for virus growth.

(10,071 posts)and have never noticed a difference in mine or my family's health due to temperature. I rarely get sick.

(21,603 posts)I have always, since early childhood, been more susceptible to viral infections than the average person.
Multiple causes in my case, but with this information about cold temperatures, I can see that being chilled probably added to the mix.

You may be able to use it with some of the wonderful content you're always sharing with us. It gives you a way to search for a potential archived link and if the link doesn't already exist it is a way to create one.
I usually check for an archived link first. It's not unusual to find out that an archived link has already been created. I have never run into a situation where I was prevented from creating an archived link.

(81,458 posts)EVERY time. Except I have it on a tether around my neck so I can wear it almost like a necklace and pull it up over my face when I need to. And it IS kinda like a necklace. It's covered in blue rhinestones!
If it's fun to wear, it's probably gonna be worn more often!

(81,458 posts)Glitz you dont have to be fearful of showing off in public! And if its ever stolen, a replacement costs just a few bucks online.
And besides, sometimes one just needs a little bit of cheap and glitzy fun! I have a blue one. I perk up every time I put it on. So THERE!!!
