Abramson: Why you need to get off Twitter NOW...

If you are still on Twitter, you need to get off it immediately. Read this brief essay to understand why the new Twitter policy Elon Musk just announced today needs to be the last straw for everyone left on the platform who is not a far-right troll or neo-Nazi.

It’s hard to believe what I just read on the Twitter feed of Elon Musk.

On Twitter, a new algorithm will allow far-right trolls to band together en masse—something they have already been shown to have done repeatedly and systematically over the last 24 months—to make the tweets of Twitter Blue–verified left-leaning accounts disappear from public visibility permanently simply by muting or blocking them.

Hatemongers. I read an article about him months ago talking about how evil he really is and said I would not be involved in his Twitter. I knew he was a bad man a long time ago. His actions don’t surprise me one bit.

Because some alleged new algorithm may supposedly allow far-right trolls to band together en masse to make verified left-leaning accounts disappear from public visibility, these same verified left-leaning account holders should preemptively make themselves "disappear"?

Strikes me as a strange sort of logic.

manipulated by him (and his friends).

Are you really thinking that this is a benevolent take-over? That a self-absorbed person like Musk has the best interests of open dialog? He's already evidenced the contrary in his recent actions.

no left leaning or sane person would want Twitter to control or sell their data to other right wingers, not to mention any of their tweet history, to who knows who.

If Musk lets Twitter go the way of Parler, whatever this govt or the EU do is what he'll deserve.

...all social media is being manipulated to basically be megaphones for the extreme right. Right-wing participants play on idiot, unsophisticated moderators by starting fights and then reporting those on the left who counter them, leading those on the left to be suspended or expelled "to protect the community". It's just like the insurrectionists who tried to stage a coup by misusing the laws and the Constitution. This is part of how fascists work; they abuse the the framework so that their rise to power looks legitimate, and that it's wrong not to accept what occurred "fair and square".

to disseminate information quickly and efficiently. It's really important during disasters and emergencies. Until Mastodon or some other vehicle takes over, Twitter will be here.

That's the real tragedy of Musk turning Twitter into another 4chan.

Many may think they are "fighting" against what Musk and his pals represent by continuing to use Twitter, but it's a sucker's game.

Your voice will be attenuated, or muted entirely, while your continued presence there will bolster his user count...and his revenue.

100% wrong.

He sounds like the RW'ers in January of 2021 pouting about finding a new social site.

240 million daily unique users.

Politics is such a small and insignificant part of the world as a whole... particularly American politics.

Here's a few examples;

HOW would I have known about MB getting an award. It's NOWHERE else online. And MB responds to comments from her fans.

Dump Twitter because some neckbeard posts something that no one sees?

Daily images of priceless historical objects and unique stories... absolutely nothing to do with Musk or TFG.

Perseverance the Rover is making news every day... look at this lovely pic from yesterday

The Egyptian Museum sharing precious images...

My favorite athlete showing love and compassion for kids....

Obscure animal of the day...

Anyway, no thanks, Seth... Twitter as it currently stands now... is far more than politics and it's literally a portal into the knowledge of the planet... at your fingertips.

So stop whining.

I like how this just incentivises us to block all paid checkmarks.

The reply is followed by ones from a number of people who already have a policy of blocking accounts with paid blue checkmarks on sight.

Oh, and what is the point of all these posts telling those of us who use Twitter what we MUST do?

I don't see it persuading anyone, and they're just a magnet for the already persuaded to chat among themselves and sometimes argue with the occasional interloper who doesn't agree.

Without getting into the "should I stay or should I go" of it, if you do decide to leave Twitter, here’s a relatively detailed process building out on the absolutely correct advice NOT to deactivate your account: your username would then become available in 30 days, and anyone could pick it up and impersonate you complete with blue verification check. You do not want that. Leaving is not as simple as hitting the "Delete My Account" link. Try these 15 steps instead, best from a web browser and not the app.
