The current pope, 86, told those at the Vatican Wednesday the 95-year-old former pope is very sick, CNN reports.
I want to ask you all for a special prayer for Pope Emeritus Benedict who sustains the Church in silence, said Francis, calling on the Lord to console and sustain him in this witness of love for the Church to the very end.
In the last few hours there has been a deterioration to the advancement of the former popes age, Vatican spokesman Matteo Bruni told CNN.
-----
Earlier this year, the former pontiff made headlines again, not for his health or age but for alleged mishandling of sexual abuse cases.
An investigation commissioned by the Church this past January showed Benedict was not only aware of clergy sexually abusing children when he was Munichs archbishop, but that he had neglected to act. Benedict served in the role of archbishop from 1977 to 1981, well before he was elected pope in 2005.
It wasnt long before Benedict requested forgiveness for any grievous faults concerning his inaction, though he did not personally apologize to those affected in the four cases, nor did he admit to any wrongdoing.

The Hitler Youth in pre-war Germany was their version of Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts. Almost every German child had to join. The Hitler Youth didn't turn into Jew-hating killers until they got much older. If the retired Pope was born in 1936 or '37, then he was still wearing knee pants when WWII was over. (I don't think he ever served in the military.)

(90,829 posts)16. I think he was born in 1927, but even so
Youre right about it being just about mandatory, like the Young Pioneers.
FakeNoose
(32,773 posts)17. If he's born in 1927 then he'd be 95 now

(113,581 posts)14. "deterioration to the advancement of his age", sounds like he is dead. Very odd
phrasing. Or very poor translating.

But felt he couldnt have 2 retired popes around. I wonder if he would be open to packing it in if Benedict passed.
