We have to figure out how to say it louder and better, so that it has an effect.

(14,491 posts)After 911, most cops have been trained to exercise tactics designed to fight serious terrorism attacks and we gave them the equipment to do it. Unfortunately, they've translated that brutal "shoot to kill" training into many routine police activities, mostly driven by shear fear and male ego. Racism and misogyny in the mix then becomes very dangerous and toxic to the public.
After a while, this militaristic attitude becomes ingrained and difficult to reverse. They need to be re-programmed but always held accountable..
It feels good to call for arrests and dismissals but that won't bring people like this young man back. The family will sue and probably get a big payoff but that won't bring this young man back either.
They also need very frequent and improved anti-racism training.

(13,113 posts)As a former trainer/educator, some things cant be trained.
Its the accountability piece that is missing.
Even if they are trained, they still have qualified immunity and corrupt unions that interfere with accountability.

(14,491 posts)I feel our community members are far too isolated from the workings of our police forces even though they are an absolute necessity for a civil society.
Some other things that should help:
1. Police recruiters should avoid gung-ho and gun-nut type personalities, as those are almost certain to come with prejudicial baggage, and recruits with hints of psychopathic personality profiles should be avoided at all cost.
2. Those so-called "internal incident investigations" should have mandatory civilian participation on the investigative boards and have mandatory periodic public reporting required.
3. Police need better weapons for disabling violent suspects other than by using lethal force.
4. Our police forces need effective PR campaigns to inform the public of the thousands of good things they do every day, whereas we typically only see the bad events.
On the other side of the fence, our general public needs better ways to connect in a community environment with our police, such a community meet-and-greet gatherings. Cops exist in their bubble and we in ours and that must end.
After all, cops are of us, they come from us, and they ARE us just as are all government employees.

(73 posts)By challenging the police department to produce a positive result from a drug test administered by an outside disinterested party. When they can't produce it, sue the ever-living crap out of them for murder, slander, defamation of character, and falsifying documents.

(32,639 posts)The guilty cops MUST answer for this citizen's needless death, of course. But there are many others with the same mindset. All the racist cops must be purged, the rest need to be retrained. This horror must end.
