(11,726 posts)It is not a new phenomenon brought on by Donald Trump. Any time there are systems where money and power are exchanged, you are going to have corruption. What we see that is different with Trump, is that he is nakedly corrupt. The concern about this particular time in history is that one of the major political parties in this country is so ideologically bankrupt, that they were willing to put someone so nakedly corrupt into office in order to advance their own power.
Also, people in the United States, with money and power rarely suffer significant consequences. What consequences did Nixon suffer from interfering with peace negotiations to end the Vietnam War, that prolonged that struggle 5 more years costing thousands of lives and hundreds of millions of not billions of dollars? He had to resign because of Watergate, a much smaller scandal, but other than resigning, he faced no consequences. What consequences did Reagan suffer for going behind Carter's back to scuttle negotiations for the release of the hostages? He made a deal to sell weapons illegally to Iran so that they would keep Americans held hostage in Iran, longer to hurt Carter's re-election chances, sold weapons of war to a State Sponsor of Terror, then turned around and used money off that enterprise to fund right wing death squads in the Nicaraguan civil war. He is seen as the great Conservative President. What consequences did George Bush Jr. face when he and Cheney lied us into war with Iraq and Afghanistan, where Cheney's former company KBR received billions in profit, as well as energy companies tied to the Administration.
Trump is particularly egregious, because he is sloppy, stupid, and vulgar. He doesn't have any of the charm, intelligence, folksy charisma, or other attributes of former corrupt politicians. He is gross and overly greedy, but that is who the Republicans chose to run against Hillary Clinton, one of the smartest and most qualified people to run for office in the past 50 years. They used rumors about Hillary's "corruption" to hurt her campaign.
You are right. Many people do think they can get away with corruption like Trump has so far, but that is not new and it is WAY WAY bigger than Donald Trump. This is systemic corruption by Conservative forces who are bent at maintaining power and wealth at all costs.

(58,785 posts)EVERY TIME they get majority power to do it. The ANTI-GOVERNMENT, ANTI-tax, anti-progressive party has been doing it for decades. tRump enabled them to do an especially outstanding job during his term, by using the big lemon thrust on them to make big lemonade.
tRump should go to prison, of course, but that wouldn't change a thing. Not while those whose corruption threw the door open for him are still being elected to power by massively corrupt RW voters.
(Nor would socialism, btw. Everyone here now would still be here. That includes the all piss-poor types who've always spun corruption as an excuse for not voting, for or against anyone.)
