14. After Watergate we knew they weren't.

There had to be a huge cleanup of the agency in the '70s due to abuses relating to Watergate and other matters. Hoover was bad enough, but his successor, Nixon's toady Patrick Gray ordered the FBI to assist with Nixon's reelection campaign, thwarted the FBI's investigation into Watergate, and destroyed Watergate-related documents seized from Howard Hunt's secret White House safe. They have done routine criminal investigations well, but they have been politically corrupted even after the reforms of the '70s.
