A Facebook friend, upon seeing that I voted for Obama, said, "I can't believe you'd vote for a socialist!" And I said that I might vote for a socialist, I'd have to see the candidate, but Obama isn't a socialist so that isn't really relevant. And she said yes he is, and she knows I'm a Democrat but I'm not a socialist. I said I'm more liberal than Obama, and she's been misled. Then she said that Obama wants to fundamentally change the nature of America by redistributing wealth. And I said any country that taxes and spends redistributes wealth and there's no way to get around that, and that it isn't a fundamental change to America to have a social safety net, but it would be to get rid of the social safety net.
The key here is that she honestly believes everything that Fox says. Libya, Obama:2016, all the conspiracy theories. I don't think the people at Fox even believe this, or all of it anyway, but they want to fire people up so they vote Republican. The problem is that it does fire some people up, and they do vote Republican, but then they've been told that American has been taken over by a socialist who will destroy the America they know, and they believe that. It's potentially dangerous. We all had a disappointment when Bush was declared victor by the Supreme Court, and then kind of re-elected, but we recognized that it's still America and voting is part of America and not always having someone you like in office is also part of it. It isn't America if you can't deal with someone you didn't vote for winning. That's the way elections work. Sometimes the person you vote for wins, and sometimes the person you vote for loses.
I am very concerned about the garbage Fox says and how many people believe it though. It's one thing to trash talk during an election, but another to make people honestly believe their President doesn't like America and is intentionally trying to destroy it. There are people who really believe that, and it's the fault of Fox News.

(31,706 posts)The message of this election is...with the proper organization and motivation, lies and big money can be beaten. Propaganda can be trumped by educated voters and that trying to buy an election...no matter how much money you try to throw at it...can and will be beaten by people power. United Citizens will and can beat Citizens United.
Yesterday we not only beat the big money, we beat the Bullshit Mountain/Hate Radio machine. All their talking points, poutrage, lying and intimidation led to a major rout at the ballot box. It was Rushbo going after Sandra Fluke that gave a lot of publicity to the defunding of Planned Parenthood and the right wing's regressive and draconian views of women. Faux noise had little impact with their skewed polls and ginned-up "controversies" (Fast & Furious, Benghazi). In short, they've catered to an audience that no longer can win national elections and are turning into a liability on the state and local level.
Let these people continue to live in the bubble and lose elections. Eventually they'll get tired of getting beat up...but it's going to take a long time...

Faux loses it's reputation as "fair and balanced" a little at a time. With proper grooming and patience most of our young adults will learn to think outside the box....I believe this. There will be those that will always believe in rush/faux...that's a sad waste of intelligence.

(37,163 posts)There were 24 brackets, ranging from 20% (adjusting for inflation, for income up to $33,500) to 91% on income over the equivalent of $3.3 million. Of those 24 brackets, 16 of them affected income over the equivalent of $250,000.
Nothing Obama has proposed comes anywhere close to that. Was Eisenhower a "socialist"? Was the USA, for having "redistributionist" tax rates like that? Then what were the Soviets?

(25,171 posts)They don't realize they're being lied to and believe every word they're spoon fed. Many of these people would probably vote for Obama if they knew what was really going on, but they listen to garbage nooze and make choices based on lies and propaganda.

(47,675 posts)It isn't a news organization. It's just propaganda. That's all it's ever been and all it ever will be. The only people who watch FOX or listen to Rush are those who are so insecure that they need reassurance that they are right.
