What happened when US police teargassed protesters – a visual investigation

A groundbreaking analysis reveals how Portland, Oregon, was blanketed with toxic chemicals, raising concerns about global teargas use: ‘This was a disaster’

Investigators have created a 3D simulation of the Portland police bureau’s (PPB) extraordinary use of teargas during a major protest event on 2 June 2020.

Forensic Architecture (FA), a research agency that investigates human rights violations, worked with weapons experts to analyze hundreds of videos from that evening, along with internal police files, invoice records, manufacturer data and photos of teargas canisters. The analysis reveals that the city’s downtown was blanketed with gas at more than 50 times the level federal regulators consider “immediately dangerous to life or health”.

The findings, about the day local activists called Teargas Tuesday, forcefully contradict the department’s assertions in internal reports at the time, in which officers defended their “heroic actions”, saying police showed “extreme restraint”, “observed no injuries” from the spraying and used teargas to target specific individuals.

I do wish the municipal and regional governments would make Portland's rejuvenation a higher priority. I also wish that the good burghers of the City Club would get off their collective . . . wallets and provide some resources to repair some of the damage inflicted in the city by the cops and their Proud Boy pals. It would be nice if the federal and county courthouses took down the plywood, traffic blocks, and cyclone fencing, and look more like bastions of democracy than armed fortresses in enemy territory.

But a group of Border Patrol officers, wearing gear not showing who they were that did some of the most horrific shit.
Trump had reportedly rounded up the scummiest, most racist, and brutal members of the border patrol from our southern border, outfitted them in the gear so no one would know who or what they were or where they came from, transported them to Portland and turned them loose..........

Oh, and BTW, the actions of the Denver Police Dept were rated #2 in the U.S. among cops in cities committing cruel acts on BLM demonstrators....Nothing to be proud of.........The Colorado State Patrol officers were there also, and saw what was happening and tried to position themselves between the demonstrators and the DPD to protect the demonstrators as well as they could. Hats off to CSP...

I'm always perplexed by that made up word. It strikes me as Republican attempt to attach enmity to a nefarious other. There is no organization, no one you can point to as an organizer. We have leaders identified for Oath Keepers, Proud Boys, and whatever Ammon Bundy leads, etc. Name an 'antifa' leader, or what their online community is or was, may then we can affix blame to them.

My Dad was one, he fought fascists in WWII, and I've always been kinda proud about that.

Speaking of the Portland, it would be real nice if their police would start wearing cameras, they've been fighting it for sometime now.

it is the manner in which it is deployed.........The DPD were using all kinds of weapons on the BLM demonstration here in Denver.......
The rubber bullets, meant to be aimed at the ground and ricochet up to hit the people's legs????? DPD was aiming them directly at the peoples faces and heads. Those metal tear gas canisters they fire into the ground around the crowd? They were aiming them directly at peoples faces and heads. Denver City Council is still paying out damages from that nights horrific behavior from our DPD.

I know that there are many good cops here in Denver, I even know a couple of them. Good, Honest, Fair, Caring Cops.

but as the old adage says: A few bad apples can spoil the whole barrel......

and at the time of countless demonstrations in the 60's, I asked a command cop on the DPD about that. He was very smart, articulate, and knowledgeable, not your average police officer! He told me that there was CS tear gas, and CN tear gas.......I cannot remember which gas was which, but he said the one gas that was outlawed would cause immediate incapacitation with severe medical issues, vomiting, etc.
He told me that one, and I can't recall which one it was, was outlawed and was definitely not being used by police departments across the nation.

Maybe some one out there knows something about this....????????????

Tue Apr 18, 2023, 01:53 PM

CN is what is commonly called mace. It affects the eyes and nasal passages. It gas a longer effect than CS.

CS is a stronger irritant. Along with affecting the eyes it will often induce vomiting, preventing the victim from standing upright.

Both are considered carcinogenic and various states prohibit the use of one or both for civilians. OC is based on natural chemicals found in peppers and legal in all 50 states.

for sharing your knowledge. Sometimes, with an old memory bank, I remember some stuff, but rely on people like you to fill in the voids.
Again, thank you.

At that time, the Denver Command Officer told me that he KNEW that the DPD didn't even have any of the CS? version, and even if they did, being a military veteran he would Never allow/command anyone below him to use it under any circumstances what so ever, it was such horrific stuff.......

At various times in my career I wore the hat of unit NBC NCO. We would use CS to simulate other chemical agents in training and prove our protective gear was sufficient.

Due to my role I also was exposed to chlorine and VX. You become very attentive to decontamination procedures knowing the outside of your Chem suit is contaminated by nerve gas.

I've practiced using the Level One? or Class A Hazmat suit that forces you to use your air bottle. (no supply hose) and just being in that suit is frightening enough, knowing you only have 15-30 minutes of air, let alone knowing that when your air runs out, you can't open the suit until they have de-conned you. Even in practice, they wouldn't let us have a knife for fear we would freak out and cut open the incredibly expensive out fit.........

As a teen I worked in swimming pools. There was a chlorine leak in the boiler room and I opened the door and walked in......WOW.
When I heard that Assad in Syria had used chemical bombs, possibly Chlorine, supplied by Putin on his own people and wiped out entire towns, I really felt for those people.....

and even that is controversial.

They didn't use it back in Boston, too much population density, too much collateral damage. Out west, the cops seem to love it. Ky first experience of it was just a couple of weeks after I moved out here, cops were trying to roust a buy in the neighborhood and shot 4 canisters into a converted 2 car garage, total overkill. The guy wasn't home but I was and trying to sleep after a 12 hour night shift and there was no sleep to be had that day. Everything in the area stank for days. I can't imagine what people in Portland and downwind went through.

The use on civilians in cities is unconscionable. I have to wonder what it did to old folks with COPD. I know what it did to my otherwise mild asthma.

CS gas needs to be banned. Cops can't be trusted with it, especially in Portland.

Oh, and by the way, tasers are not tranquilizers, either.

Just thought I'd point that out.

Young, healthy soldiers can cope with the shit. Among civilians, there are kids, old people, and people with respiratory problems who can't cope with it.

I really want to see that stuff taken away from the cops. They can use the money they're spending on it to train the cops better on the use of tasers.

There are poisonous gasses being used in all kinds of Military conflicts around the world.

Assad in Syria is one of the most recent ones. Assad and Putin are buddies. Putin wanted to help Assad take control in Syria. Therefore basically giving Putin control of Syria......
Putin gave Assad a bunch of poisonous chemical bombs to drop on the people revolting against assad. Entire populations in several towns were wiped out...........Of course, at the time, the U.S. Military was stationed there, protecting the protesting Syrians. Trump, ordered our Military out of Syria with one day notice, leaving everything and running. Without the U.S. Military, Assad was free to use any and all weapons on the revolting Syrians.....and he did, that same day the U.S. Military bugged out on command from Trump.....

This is fact about what happened in Syria thanks to Putin and his handmaiden Donald Trump.......I don't know what exactly gas was used, but could probably find out.........Maybe Chlorine?????

Chemical weapons were outlawed after WW1, by the Geneva Convention............. Supposedly...............
Tell that to the City of Pueblo Colorado, that still has a weapons Depot from WW11. They are sitting on 65,000. "Wet Eye" bombs, just sitting in that Depot, and they are finally rusting thru and leaking.......They Military is trying to disarm them, but moving at a snails pace.
Makes one wonder, why the fuck did we even manufacture these out lawed chemical bombs????????? And how many depots across the nation have similar weapons just rusting away?????????/

And don't even get me started on the Hanford? site in Washington/Oregon. It is a ticking time bomb of a nightmare proportions, way beyond comprehension.
